This is an exeptional album, a collection of old French songs from 30s and 40s rearanged in a variety of music stiles. Her voice and musical talent is extraordinary. The album was produced with the help of legenday Quincy Jones and John Clayton. Zaz has been one of France’s most successful international music exports, selling over 3 million copies of the her first two albums, with legions of fans in over 50 countries, from Chile to Russia, Germany to Japan. The album, a tribute to the many songs and personalities of Paris finds Zaz in the musical company of such stars and luminaries as Charles Aznavour, the bassist John Clayton, singer Nikki Yanofsky, and producer Quincy Jones. A lifelong lover of jazz, this is Zaz’s first album backed by a full big-band.

Just a fantastic album Nov. 21 2014

I speak only a little French, but the infectious cheer in this album does not require translation. It is possible to hear the smile on her face while singing. It is a collection of covers of older French songs (with one original composition), the whole produced by Quincy Jones. The gradual transition from small ensemble sound in her earlier album "Zaz" to big band sound feels natural, and like Edith Piaf, to whom she is frequently compared, she handles the transition and material well. Also new in this album is the presence of several duets, with Thomas Dutronc, Charles Aznavour and Nikki Yanofsky. Zaz's voice and style is still present, however, and she has made excellent choices in her collaborators.

Some of these songs were written during the occupation of Paris by German forces during WWII, and some of the press surrounding this album has been negative for that reason, saying it minimizes the suffering of the time. My own take is that, with lines like "Plus on réduit son éclairage /Plus on voit briller son courage...Paris sera toujours Paris" (The more you subdue her lights/ The more you see her courage shine...Paris will always be Paris) it demonstrates the refusal of the Parisians to let the hardship keep them down.

It is exciting to watch a really talented artist develop her craft like this, and while the sound on this album is not the intimate, minimalist, street singer style that initially drew me to her music, it's still great listening.

Highly recommended.

I'm very disappointed with the "new" slick big band sound of this album. And I can only hope that she will recover or evolve upon her original style which made the two previous albums such a pleasure to listen to.
