I own the Kindle Keyboard (`KK'), the Kindle Paperwhite 2 (i.e. 2013's model) (`PW2') and now the Kindle Voyage (in effect, the Kindle Paperwhite 3). I will compare the three and give my opinion on whether the upgrade is worth it. I will also give my personal opinion on whether or not paying extra for the 3G version (of this or any Kindle) is worth it. As some people will be new to the Kindle, I will cover a few basics first.
1. BASICS - WHY BUY A KINDLE?
It used to be the case that there was, arguably, not much of an advantage of a Kindle over physical books. Kindle books used to be virtually the same price as new paperbacks, which always seemed wrong, and paperbacks had the advantage that you could pass them on after you had read them.
The game changer, in my opinion, was the Kindle Paperwhite due to its frontlight. At that point, Kindles offered a distinct advantage over paperbacks - you could read books in the dark (with a light so subtle that it is unlikely to wake up your partner in bed). But the frontlight goes beyond that - it improves reading indoors in daylight, and makes the screen appear more white, like paper (without the light, the screen looks green or grey). The frontlight can be found on the Paperwhite 1, Paperwhite 2 & Voyage.
What also changed was the pricing - Kindle books started to cost less than paperbacks, often significantly so. Further, Amazon runs sales regularly (for example a Summer Sale, Autumn Sale, Christmas Sale, Spring Sale etc. - they even had one for the Golden Jubilee) where books are discounted, often to approximately 99p. Amazon also runs a Daily Deal where books are discounted until midnight (they started with one book per day; now it tends to be three or more). Recently it has added a Monthly Deal. Read more ›

Buyer beware! Since buying this device I have discovered that some of the books advertised as being available for purchase / download on to Kindle are, in fact, incompatible with the new Kindle Voyage. This has been checked out and found to be so by the Amazon help desk team. Because these books are needed for work (and having them on a Kindle device would make searching for references easy) I am seriously having to think about buying a previous version of Kindle.
Needless to say I am not impressed - particularly as there was no advance warning about this shortfall in either the spec or advance publicity.

First off I am one of the people who upgraded from the Kindle Paperwhite and yes it is more expensive but as someone who reads in excess of 100 books a year I consider it a must have purchase.
It is smaller in size and lighter but even so it is still a compact and robust piece of kit. I have been using it for about two weeks now and have fiddled with the settings. I felt I didn't need the vibrate function that happens when you turn the page, to me it was a distraction. I've also set it low for page turn. You do have to be careful as in the beginning i was turning pages when i was moving my reading position but thats easily sorted.
The light being sensitive to the light in your vicinity is a nice touch and I am using the auto setting. The Voyage is also more touch sensitive and has a faster response then using the Amazon store. The screen is definitely sharper and more like a book than ever before.
The only con I can foresee is the fact the battery does not last as long as the Paperwhite which while not the end of the world is still something I am going to keep an eye on.
In short I am extremely pleased that I have managed to get my hands on one so soon after release

I was a bit unsure if it was worthwhile replacing my much loved Paperwhite, but couldn't resist it after reading the reviews. I love my Voyage. The text is clearer and easier to read. Page turning is smooth and simple. I find that I like to set my own light level rather use "auto", but have no problem with tired eyes. If you like to get stuck into a good book and read for hours, the Voyage is for you.

The screen freezes and I have to reset it several times a day. I do not seem to be able to update the software. It will not connect to my Sony Vaio computer. I upgraded from my very old kindle. At the moment I am not particularly happy with this expensive new model.

Worked flawlessly for a week then started freezing after waking up or while reading . Needs to hard restart the device . I had several kindle from keyboard and Paper White. This is my 5th Kindle and it does have a serious flaw either in the software or linked some how to hardware components.
I do not wish to receive a refurbished replacement. I have raised the issue with Amazon Support and will be waiting for there engineers to come back. If there is no fix via software update, I will be returning the device.

Having persuaded my husband that a Kindle was the way forward, I bought the 'new' Voyage as a birthday present, having to wait for delivery it has been disappointing to say the least.
The device has constant 'application errors' and needs re-booting each use. The soluton was a software update (on a new device????) but still the error occurs. Might need a replacement apparently? Don't order this item if you are in a rush to use it :-(
