‘Jobs': Kate Winslet Eyed for Female Lead (Exclusive)

14 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kate Winslet is in negotiations for the female lead in Universal’s “Jobs,” the biopic of the late Steve Jobs.

Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs, while Seth Rogen is on board to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Danny Boyle will direct.

Aaron Sorkin penned the script with Scott Rudin, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady producing.

The pic is based on the Walter Isaacson biography and was originally set up at Sony before Universal picked it up out of turnaround when Sony let it go.

Jeff Daniels is also circling the role of former Apple president John Scully, though no offer is in place.

Given the pedigree of the pic, it’s no surprise Winslet was drawn to the role. She’s  already garnered six Oscar nominations and one win for best actress for her performance in “The Reader.”

She can be seen next reprising her role as Jeanine »

George Clooney Pushes For VOD Release Of 'The Interview,' Calls Out Hollywood For Lack Of Courage

19 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Right now, the biggest movie story in Hollywood isn't about an Oscar contender, or even a movie that will be opening this holiday season. Instead, it's about Seth Rogen and James Franco's "The Interview," which might be the most notorious unreleased film in recent memory. Certainly, everything around the movie has been unprecedented, with exhibitors across the country cancelling their plans to put the movie in their cinemas, following threats by hackers with ties to North Korea invoking 9/11. This in turn forced Sony to drop any and all release plans for "The Interview." And while there seemed to be a glimmer of hope when a new promo for the film appeared on Sony's YouTube channel yesterday, it has since been yanked. So too have all clips from the film. And an unlikely, angry voice has emerged calling out Hollywood's lack of courage. George Clooney took some time to talk to Deadline, »

It isn't quite what Beyonce pulled off a year ago, but Madonna gave her fans a Christmas surprise by releasing six new songs from her upcoming album "Rebel Heart" late Friday night on iTunes. In a statement Madonna noted, "I was hoping to release my new single 'Living For Love' on Valentine's Day with the rest of the album coming in the Spring. The new tracks, which included more rap than even rumored, include "Living for Love," "Devil Pray," "Illuminati," "Ghosttown" and "Unapologetic Bitch" and "Bitch, I'm Madonna" featuring Nicki Minaj.  Producers on the tracks are Diplo, Kanye West and Billboard. Craig Ferguson Signs Off ‘Late Late Show’ with Jay Leno, Homage to Classic TV Finales

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A wistful Craig Ferguson wrapped a 10-year run on CBS’ “The Late Late Show” on Friday with a surprise closing segment that paid tribute to a handful of classic TV series finales.

Spoiler Alert: Stop reading if you haven’t seen Friday’s edition of “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Ferguson signed off after 2,058 episodes in characteristically quirky fashion, running through many of the show’s regular comedy bits, such as bantering with sidekick Geoff the talking robot skeleton and showcasing Secretariat, the show’s “fake horse” brought to life by two people in a classic pantomime horse costume.

The guest segment featured Jay Leno in a candid, and for Ferguson fairly low-key, session of swapping stories of talkshow host gripes about lame guests, pushy publicists and the trials of aging on the job. Leno, who signed off “The Tonight Show” in February, looked like a guy who’s been semi-retired for 10 months, »

Interview: Baylor Wilson talks 'Survivor: San Juan del Sur'

4 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

"Survivor: San Juan del Sur" finished its season on Wednesday (December 17) night with a terrific finale that trimmed the field down from the episode-opening Top 5 of Baylor, Missy, Keith, Jaclyn and Natalie down to four and then three and then a very deserving winner. Over the next five nights, I'll be posting the five exit interviews I did all before 10:15 on Thursday morning, counting down from fifth place. It happens that the fifth place elimination was one of the season's most shocking, as Natalie bucked with a long-established plan to go to the finals with Baylor and Missy by playing an Immunity Idol for Jaclyn, turning a shocking vote against the totally blindsided Baylor.  The season's youngest player at 20, Baylor got a bit of a negative rap through the season for being wishy-washy, for being a brat, for being carried along by her mother Missy. But if you look at certain moments in isolation, »

Film Review: ‘Poker Night’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Poker Night” offers a near-indigestible mix of tricky “Pulp Fiction”-esque structural convolution, torture-porn tropes and a somewhat distasteful level of snark, making for a self-satisfied puzzle that most viewers will run out of patience trying to unravel. This first theatrical feature for TV veteran Greg Francis won’t linger long in theaters after its single-screen Los Angeles launch on Dec. 20. Nonetheless, some familiar cast faces and other marketable elements should make it salable in various markets as a home-format item; it was released on VOD and iTunes earlier this month.

After an instance of highly public heroism, he’s invited to the titular ritual evening, where, between playing hands, a circle of older policemen (including Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito and Ron Eldard) school him by relating stories “worth a year’s street experience.” Each invariably »

What happened to 'Top Five' at Golden Globes, and can it rebound at Oscars?

"Top Five" is a comeback of sorts for Chris Rock, a celebrated stand-up comic and TV host whose filmic ventures have ranged from successful (the "Madagascar" animated franchise) to not so much ("Pootie Tang," "I Think I Love My Wife," the critically drubbed "Grown Ups" films). But with "Top Five," which he wrote, directed, and stars in, he has gotten the best reviews of his film career. So why were he and the film snubbed at the Golden Globes? -Break- Shocking Golden Globes snubs: Angelina Jolie (twice), Bradley Cooper, ... Recap: 'The Amazing Race' Season 25 Finale - The Winners Are...

There are several things that have to be discussed in this recap of Friday (December 19) night's "Amazing Race" finale, but I want to get this out of the way: I don't think Brooke was wrong to be pissed off to see The Candy Girls arrive at the Manila airport after the last Leg and I don't think Adam was wrong to say that he was frustrated. When I talked to Phil Keoghan about the rash of episodes in which teams didn't go home this season -- Four out of 11 episodes -- he said that people were universally excited by the ending of the last Leg, because it was something they had never seen before.  True. What they hadn't seen before was a team get spared from elimination at the end of what was, for all intents and purposes, a Leg despite finishing last, only to be immediately rewarded with an Equalizer at the airport, »
