Start boating: Motor Cruising
Coastal motor cruising is a fun and sociable way to spend time afloat whilst exploring a variety of locations in Britain and Europe. Powering across the open sea in excess of 30 knots is exhilarating and will provide you with a thrilling experience. If you get excited by the prospect of leaving a marina along the South Coast after breakfast and arriving in a quaint French port for a fabulous seafood lunch, then motor cruising could be for you. You can take your motor cruiser and anchor in a secluded bay for lunch, to relax and soak up the atmosphere, before returning to a marina for a civilised evening ashore. You do not even have to rely on the wind!
What's it about?
Coastal motor cruising is about exploring places of natural beauty and new harbours in comfort with style and sophistication, whilst covering large distances quickly and easily.
Try out on the water
You could charter a motor cruiser with skipper for a day trip whilst on holiday abroad, or look more locally at the many RYA Training Centres which offer charters and run taster days.
Starter courses
The RYA’s Helmsman’s course is the ideal course for beginners, it is a two day course and teaches basic helmsmanship, boat safety and boat handling skills.
What you’ll need
The RYA Training Centre that you choose will provide all the safety kit you require and will have wet weather clothing available. You will therefore require only the minimum of kit to get started.
Find a club
Joining a club is a great way to become involved with the many social and cruising events. You will also meet boat owners who are regularly looking for friends to join them on the water.
Where to buy
Chandleries in marinas, online mail order companies and your training centre are all good places to buy kit, as are the National Boat Shows in Southampton and London.
Books, Websites and Magazines
The RYA is the leading publisher and retailer of boating books so look no further for all the literature you require. A wealth of information can also be obtained from specialist websites and magazines.
