Touchscreen display

New—A touchscreen interface makes it easier to use features like X-Ray, Goodreads, built-in dictionary, highlighting, and more. And with a glare-free screen that looks like real paper, you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room

Weeks-long battery life

Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Easy on the eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle, the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room, so theres no adjustment needed.

Lighter than a paperback

Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

Reads like the printed page

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality.

Every Kindle E-reader...

Sharp, dark text

Enjoy text that reads like the printed page. All fonts have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Take and share notes

Add margin notes that you can edit, delete, or even export from your device to your computer. Share highlighted sections and meaningful quotes on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads, and see passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers.

Flip through without losing your place

With Page Flip, you can skim page-by-page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place. Show me

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value at $79 with a Few Nits October 3, 2014
Configuration:With Special Offers|Verified Purchase
I am writing this from the perspective of being a long-time experienced Kindle user vs. someone brand new. From an overall perspective, considering the pricing of the Kindle with Special Offers at $79 vs. higher amounts for the different flavors of Kindle available today, this one is a bargain. If you have wanted to get your kids a Kindle to encourage reading as well as sharing of books but hesitated because $119 to $400+ is a lot of money to risk with a child, maybe at $79 this is your price point.

From a size standpoint, the reading screen is the exact same size as the other e-Ink Kindles. It is slightly thicker - but slightly lighter - than the Kindle Paperwhite, but to me it's not really a noticeable difference when you're holding it in a protective cover.

Opening up the box, included with the Kindle is a micro-USB cord but no power adapter. That's really annoying. Interestingly, and it seems rather chicken of Amazon, a power adaptor has to be purchased separately for $15 if you purchase it at the same time as you purchase the Kindle (or $20 if you purchase it later), so if you already have a micro-USB charger handy I wouldn't order one of the chargers.

There are no page buttons - no buttons at all except for the power button - and turning the page is as easy as tapping the side of the screen with your thumb while you're reading, or swiping the screen with your finger.

Reading is easy on this one: in comparison to my Kindle Keyboard, the previous version of Kindle, and a Kindle DX the letters on the screen are much, much darker and easier to read: the display is crisp and dark.

Configuration:With Special Offers|Verified Purchase
I was very happy with my old Kindle, with the little buttons at the bottom, and the page turn buttons on the side. When I finally broke the last one and all my warranty replacements were out (get the warranty, by the way - outstanding deal, good service), I looked all over for a replacement, but there were none to be had. Apparently, this is the new generation of my Kindle, and I have to take what they're offering.

The appearance of the visual interface is different, and in my opinion less attractive than the old.

The new "time left in chapter" feature apparently thinks it takes me one minute to read a chapter, no matter how long that chapter is.

The distance between the power switch and the charger socket is increased which means I have to take the Kindle out of its cover to charge it.

But the worst is the touch screen. I didn't want a touch screen, but apparently I no longer have the option. My hands tend to tremble, which makes aiming at the small screen an adventure. The sensitivity is such that sometimes the slightest breeze will cause the pages to turn and sometimes all the tapping in the world doesn't seem to work. If I hold the Kindle anywhere but the bottom, I end up turning pages, sometimes repeatedly, so I wind up spending more time trying to get back to the place I was at than I do actually reading.

I was happy with the Kindle I had, but now I get to pay more for what I consider an inferior product that doesn't suit my needs anywhere near as well as the product it is intended to replace.

#Progress

One potential positive: The battery seems to last longer, though it has only been a few days, so I could be wrong about that.

BRING BACK THE BUTTONS!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, Once You Start Reading October 3, 2014
Configuration:With Special Offers|Verified Purchase
[Update 3 November 2014. It's been a month and I'm happy to report my son has frequently read using this simple Kindle. He's still reading physical books from the library, but we've purchased several books from Amazon on this device and he's quickly and happily read through them. Due to the little 'smudge' that developed on the screen, I've put this in a case, and I hope no more smudges appear. Battery life has been awesome in comparison to LED devices, and nobody has had to interrupt their reading to find a charger, and it's been fully charged maybe 3 times in a month.]

I bought this value-priced Kindle to solve a problem. My 9 year old son loves to read; he will tear through a Harry Potter book in a couple of days. But, he has no interest in reading on a regular tablet whether it be one of the iPads in the house, or the Kindle Fire HD. Something about the experience, basically staring at a white lamp for hours, keeps him from enjoying it like he enjoys traditional paper books. But paper books are bulky, and accumulate, and get kicked around the car, and have to be returned to the library. Many times, I'd just prefer to have the convenience of an eBook.

So, when this new generation of Kindle E Ink readers were announced, and at such a low price, I impulsively put in a pre-order. I could cheaply experiment to see if it was right for my son. This whole device costs less than the extended warranty on my iPad.

When it arrived, I made an error. I powered it on. One of my children asked to see it, I handed it over, and when it was handed back, it had been set to German and was midway through the tutorial you walk through to learn the basics of operating the Kindle. Now my German has been completely unlearned since I was in college, so I was at sea.
