Start boating: Windsurf
Windsurfing is often recognised as an extreme sport that provides limitless thrills and excitement in a range of disciplines. However, it is also a great way for the whole family to enjoy a beach holiday or have an active day out on the water at a more laid back pace. Whether your aspirations are to ride big waves, to compete in slalom or course racing, to sail freestyle, or just to sail for fun whilst on holiday with the family, there will be something for you.
What's it about?
Windsurfing is the fastest of all the sailing disciplines with speeds of 50 knots recorded! It provides a great physical and technical challenge and is available to everyone.
Try out on the water
There are many RYA approved Training Centres in the UK and abroad which run taster sessions providing an ideal opportunity to get out for the first time.
Starter courses
The RYA runs the National Windsurfing Scheme for adults and the Youth Windsurfing Scheme for youngsters. Both schemes offer courses that are ideal for beginners.
What you'll need
The RYA training centre that you choose will provide all the safety kit and clothing that you require, you will therefore need only the minimum of personal kit to get started.
Find a club
It is worthwhile joining a local club as most offer a good range of social and sailing events. Clubs offer a range of fantastic facilities and some rent out windsurfing equipment.
Where to Buy
Water sports shops and online mail order companies are good places to buy kit, as are the National Boat Shows in Southampton and London.
