International Career:

Scotland’s youngest-ever senior international cap when he faced Ireland in Dublin at the age of 16, Achara previously represented the country at Under-16 and Under-18. He averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds at the 2004 European Promotion Cup. Missing out on competing for Scotland at the 2006 Commonwealth Games due to college commitments, he made his Great Britain senior debut in 2008 and helped the side qualify for EuroBasket 2009 in Poland. He was a key contributor off the bench in 2010’s qualifiers but failed to make the final roster for EuroBasket 2011. However he won his place back for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and scored a team-high 16 points in GB’s victory over China.

Achara grew up in Stirling and had a Scottish flag tattooed on his arm when he moved to the USA to remind him of home. He cites his biggest influences in basketball as junior coaches George and Neil Connell, as well as ex-Falkirk and Scotland team-mate Keith Bunyan.

His first sporting love was football and he supports Glasgow Rangers. His favourite Olympic memory was watching Linford Christie win 100 metres gold for Great Britain in Barcelona in 1992. Majored in management at university. Name pronounced (KEE-Ron ATCH-Ara)

Trivia:

His brother Idris competed for Great Britain in basketball at the Special Olympics in Athens in 1998.
