History

The first modern triathlon was organised on 25th of September 1974 in Mission Bay in San Diego, California, USA. However, it’s believed that triathlons also took place in France during the 1920s. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in May of 1989 in Avignon, France and the same town staged the first World Championships in August of the same year. First official British Triathlon was at Kirton's Farm near reading on 5th June 1983

Olympic History

In 1994, during an IOC session in Paris, it was announced that the sport had formally become part of the Olympic Programme.

The triathlon made its debut at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney where 500,000 spectators watched the event for two days.

Technical

The distances for the each leg of the modern triathlon in Olympic and world championships competition are: 1500m open-water swim, 40km cycle and 10,000m run.

At the Olympics both men’s and women’s events are capped at 55 qualified competitors. After a mass start for the swim leg, the race remains continuous, with no stop between the three legs.

Changeovers - better known as transitions – are vital to the race strategy. The time taken to change over gear and equipment from one phase of the race to the next can have a huge impact on the race.

equipment

Essential equipment for a triathlete consists of a tri suit, a pair of swimming goggles, a bicycle, a bicycle helmet and a pair of running shoes.
