Lillehammer 1994
Lillehammer in Norway saw the first Olympic Winter Games to be staged in a new cycle which placed them at the mid point of the Olympiad. Norway's athletes won an impressive ten gold medals, only Russia won more. Norway's brightest star was speed-skater Johan Olav Koss. He won three gold medals, setting a new world record with each of his triumphs, in the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m. In the latter, he gave one of the great individual performances in Winter Olympics history, winning by a staggering 18.70 seconds.
Great Britain's Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won bronze in figure skating, ice dancing event.
