The 1936 Olympic Winter Games were held in the twin Bavarian towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen in Germany, 500,000 spectators watched the games The European nations dominated and Norway won seven golds.
Speed skater Ivan Ballangrud of Norway won three of the four possible titles, including the 500 metres - the shortest race - and the 10,000 metres - the longest. Great Britain beat Canada in the ice hockey competition winning them gold. Britain's Cecilia Colledge won silver in women's singles figure skating.
