They say all kids have a few OCD tendencies. Having to color perfectly inside the lines. Sticking their tongues out when they're concentrating real hard. Checking to make sure there are no monsters under the bed for the 10th time.

Most eventually grow out of it. But there's one weird quirk that is universal and lingering: The new shoe conundrum. You put a kid in a bright, shiny new pair of shoes, and the internal struggle between running super fast through that mud puddle and maintaining cleanliness reaches a whole new level of neurosis.

Present your kid with a pristine pair of Reebok Zig running shoes and a sandbox and watch their little heads explode. But don't worry too much. It's only a matter of time until some jerk kid stomps on their toes during gym class. And once they've recovered from that soul-crushing incident and emerged from the mental breakdown, they'll be back to obliviously tracking dog crap through the house.
