on 30-09-2014 12:58

GB Wheelchair fencer Piers Gilliver has made British history by becoming the first ever British fencer to win a Gold Medal at a World Cup Grand Prix event.

Gilliver, who was competing in the Men’s Cat A Epee event at the  IWASF Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix in Warsaw Poland, went into the D.E in good form after a strong poules round and easily progressed to the last eight where he met London 2012 Epee Silver Medallist Romain Noble (France) .This match saw Gilliver win convincingly against Noble with a score of 15 -3.

Defeating Shaburov RUS in the last four, Gilliver progressed to the Finals piste where he was to meet World No 1 Epeeist Darius Pender from Poland. In a close match that went to a nailbiting finish with the score at 14 -14, Gilliver went on to take the final hit, victory and gold medal for Great Britain.

The Grand Prix is the first in a series of competitions which carry points towards qualification to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. This was certainly a very good start for Piers and a solid result for the GB Team.
