The BBU is proud to be sponsored by

The British Biathlon Union (BBU) is the UK National Governing Body (NGB) for the Olympic winter sport of Biathlon. The BBU was incorporated on 23 October 1996 and selects the GBR teams at all levels.

This site is updated frequently during the winter season, and periodically from April - November!

05 Oct 14 - GBR SELECTION RACES - 17 & 19 NOVEMBER 2014

GBR National Selection races will be held in Beitostølen NOR on Monday 17 (Sprint) & Wednesday 19 (Mass Start) November 2014.

We are unable to use our normal selection venue of Sjusjøen NOR this year. Beitostølen is also the venue for the “Beito Sprints” (21 – 23 Nov) and the IBU Cup 1 (28-30 Nov). The BBU can only make travel and accommodation arrangements for current National Squad athletes, although the races are open to any UK passport holder – male or female. Non Squad athletes must register, by Email, their intent to enter by Monday 27 October 2014.

It is appreciated that some of the athletes aspiring to compete in the Junior World Champs in Feb 15 will have had very little time on snow by 17 & 19 Nov. Selection for these Championships will thus not be confirmed until after the RAC Champs in Hochfilzen AUT (8 & 9 Jan 15), but obviously competing in both the Section & RAC races will help their cause.

05 Oct 14 - BRITISH BIATHLON & NORDIC CHAMPIONSHIPS – RUHPOLDING 2015, "BOYS & GIRLS" and "MASTERS" RACES

The AWSA has been approached with a view to re-introducing races for “Boys & Girls” as well as “Masters” in 2015. (For the 2014 - 15 season,  Boys & Girls are those born in 2000 or later; Masters are those born in 1980 or earlier).  Click for detailed information.

A decision on whether any of the above races will take place in 2015 will depend on a guaranteed level of interest.  Clubs  should notify the BBU (on behalf of the AWSA) of the intended participation of any of their athletes, including Date of Birth, in either or both of Cross Country & Biathlon at “Boy” / “Girl” / “Masters” (indicating Male or Female) level by no later than Monday 20 October 2014. Individual athletes not in a Club should note the same deadline.  Please Email your interest to: info@britishbiathlon.com

(Civilian biathloln & ski clubs were informed of this in August, but so far there have been no registrations of interest!)

05 Oct 14 - WORLD CUP TICKETS & ACCOMMODATION

The BBU office is, as usual, already receiving requests from supporters concerning World Cup tickets, travel and accommodation.  Unfortunately we do not receive any allocations of tickets and are simply not able to assist with the booking of any facilities. We suggest you go direct to the relevant WC website (go through Google!) where there are links to accommodation as well as on-line ticketing. It is difficult in some venues to get a bed in the resort, but they are always available in the near vicinity. Tickets (except for VIP tickets) rarely sell out, but it is always best to book everything early!

We look forward to seeing supporters – old and new – on the World Cup circuit in the forthcoming winter.

05 Oct 14 - IBU CONGRESS REPORT

Anders BESSEBERG was re-elected as President of the IBU at the 11th IBU Regular Congress in St Wolfgang AUT last month. Besseberg, a former Coach of GBR has held the Presidential post since 1993.

Östersund SWE had an absolute majority in the first, and only, round of voting to select the venue for the 2019 World Championships. Results:

Östersund SWE: 27 votes;  Antholz ITA: 16; Nove Mesto CZE: 4; Khanty- Mansiysk RUS: 2

Other key decisions include:

  • The "percentage" qualification system will be replaced by new "IBU Points" from the end of the 2014 -15 season. IBU points will be scored on both World Cup and IBU Cup.

  • Start quotas for World Cup will change at the end of the 2014 -15 season with the Nation finishing in 23rd having 3 (not 2) start places – a big incentive for the GBR Men to hold on to our 23rd place this coming winter!

  • A “Junior” IBU Cup will be up and running from the 2015 – 16 season (probably only 4 events), based on existing National / Alpen Cups.

  • The 2016 Congress will be held in the Moldovan capital city, Chisinau.

  • The Start of Relays and Mass Start will be changed with immediate effect. No longer will athletes line up 10 abreast and double pole for the first 100m; instead they will line up just 3 abreast and skate from the very start. Trials show that this format reduces crashes, injuries and equipment damage.

Full reports including all the voting results and video clips are on the IBU Web page

05 Oct 14 - THE OLYMPICS NOBODY WANTS

With the withdrawal of Norwegian candidate Oslo from the bid to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games there are just two cities remaining. Beijing CHN (where the ski areas are further away from the city than Aviemore is from London) and Almaty in Kazakhstan are the last two of the original 8 candidates.

It is a sad move for sports fans in general and winter sport for fans and athletes in particular.

13 Feb 14 - HOW TO START OUR GREAT SPORT!

From time to time we receive enquiries about "How to Start in Biathlon". Every 4 years at the time of the OWG there is an upsurge in these enquiries and this year is no exception. Two or 3 a day for the last fortnight! Wow, and thanks for your enthusiasm. Alas it is not easy to start in the UK as there is only one civilian racing club (Cairngorm BNSC in Aviemore) and one "Masters" club (Wessex BNSC) near Bath. Virtually all other biathletes in the UK are in the Army, together with a few Royal Marines.

Notwithstanding the BBU's new sponsorship deal with Aspen Healthcare Solutions (UK) Ltd we simply do not have the resources to nurture your enthusiasm. But, do not despair! Read our link "About Us & How to Start". It may not make you happy, but it explains our current situation and we are always willing to listen to suggestions. But, what we cannot do is to pour non-existent money into Development. We may be able to run a couple of Talent ID road-shows later this year; watch this space!
