Greening Events
Greening your
club’s events and regattas can have great benefits (such as
improved image and cost savings) and it really isn’t that difficult
to do. The London 2012 Olympic Games are aiming to be a zero waste
and sustainable games, so the standard is being set and we can all
do our best to try to match it.
You’ll be amazed
at the improvements you can make with just a little thought
and support from your members. Here are a few of the issues that
clubs can tackle when looking to "green up" their events.
- Litter entering the water from blowing
off shore/overboard or capsizing
- Increased waste produced by the
competitors and race officials
- Spread of invasive non native species
from one location to another
- Increased carbon emissions caused by
the transportation of competitors and equipment
- Increased use of resources such as
paper, plastic, electricity and water
- Oil and fuel entering the marine
environment from safety boats either when refuelling or through the
bilge
- Increased food miles for the event
