Sansum sets sights on winning Battle of Britain for Rio spot

Taekwondo fighter Damon Sansum insists he is paying attention to the small details as he bids for Rio 2016 success.

Although a former world kickboxing champion, Sansum has underlined his potential in taekwondo since making the switch, walking away with his first ever World Grand Prix medal recently as he took home gold from Kazakhstan.

However, with just one -80kg spot at the 2016 Olympics in Rio up for grabs for Team GB, making it on the team for Brazil will not be straight forward with the likes of London 2012 bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad also in the mix.

But that isn’t going to stop Sansum from giving it his best shot as he bids to come out on top in the battle of Britain.

"Results are starting to come and my ranking has gone up significantly, so everything's in place for giving it my best shot and hopefully making it to Rio," Sansum said.

"It can go either way and hopefully next time I'll come out on top when it matters - in World Championships, Grand Prix and Olympics.

"The last six or seven tournaments has been GB v GB at Under-80kg and it's quite unheard of.With the standard as it is in the UK any one of the Under-80kg fighters could win the Olympics, but only one person goes. You just have to make sure that it's you that goes.

"We're all up there, you just have to make sure you do something different. At this standard, it's just marginal gains. Everyone is as good as each other but you need to do something differently to get that place."
