2.4mR Open Worlds set to start in Toronto

British sailors primed for World Championship action
Britain’s Helena Lucas and Megan Pascoe will be aiming to improve on their 2013 podium finishes when the 2.4mR Open World Championship gets under in Toronto, Canada, next week (30 September-3 October).
The Open Worlds sees competition between both able-bodied and disabled sailors in the one-person keelboat, with around 40 sailors set to contest the 2014 edition of the event on Lake Ontario.
Poole Yacht Club played host to the 2013 event, where Paralympic Champion Lucas was pipped to gold on the final day by Sweden’s Stellan Berlin – who took a record seventh Open Worlds title – with bronze going to the British Sailing Team’s Megan Pascoe.
Lucas hit form at last month’s IFDS World Championships in Halifax, Canada, to claim silver just one point behind the German victor Heiko Kroeger, while Pascoe’s most recent triumph in a successful season came at the European Championships in July where she took gold in convincing style.
The British Sailing Team’s Podium Potential sailor Will Street will also be in action across the four days of competition at the Canadian venue.
In addition to Berlin, who’ll be looking to extend his record to eight victories, Canada’s Paul Tingley and Bruce Millar, Norway’s Bjornar Erikstad and Sweden’s Henrik Johnsson – runner up to Pascoe at the European Championships – are also expected to feature in the race for the medal positions.
