Boccia: Great Britain won silver and bronze in the pairs and team events at the World Boccia Championships in Beijing.
Scott McCowan, Jacob Thomas and Patrick Wilson finished runners-up to Korea in the BC3 pairs event after beating Japan and Greece, but found the world number ones too strong in the final, losing 6-1.
The BC1/2 team of Nigel Murray, David Smith, Joshua Rowe and Martin Davis lost out to Brazil in their semi-final but recovered to beat Slovakia 6-2 for bronze.
There was disappointment for the BC4 pairs team who were beaten 6-0 by China in the play-off for third and fourth place.
The individual competition is on-going in China.
Canoeing: Fiona Pennie produced a fast and flawless run to win the women’s K1 Silver in Deep Creek on the final day of the World Championships.
The 32-year-old won the 2013 Europeans title in Vienna but it had been a long wait for Worlds success, her last medal there being silver at the 2006 event in Prague. This year she had also not won a medal on the World Cup circuit.
There was also a silver medal for Mallory Franklin in the non-Olympic women’s C1 discipline.
Cycling: Great Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins took an emphatic win to become world champion in the elite men’s time trial, denying three-time winner Tony Martin of Germany by 26 seconds.
Twice a silver medallist in 2011 and 2013, the Olympic champion became the first British man to win the elite title since Chris Boardman’s inaugural win in 1994.
The result was given extra significance for Wiggins, 2014 his last tilt at the world time trial title before turning to the track ahead of Rio 2016.
The event is on-going in Ponferrada, Spain.
Modern Pentathlon: Pentathlon GB has announced the appointment of Nigel Laughton as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Nigel, who has 17 years’ experience working in elite sport, joins Pentathlon GB - the National Governing Body for the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon - on 3 November 2014.
He comes to Pentathlon GB after three years as Performance Director of British Skeleton, the NGB of the winter sport of Skeleton. That role included working as Team GB’s Team Leader for Skeleton at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, where Britain’s Lizzy Yarnold won gold.
Sailing: Giles Scott maintained his unbeaten regatta run since returning to Finn class sailing a year ago to win gold at the World Championships in Santander.
Scott came fourth in Sunday's race but only had to finish to win gold. Fellow Briton Ed Wright's third place gave him the bronze medal, while Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark took second in their final race to secure bronze in the 470 class.
British Sailing booked places in all ten classes for the Rio Olympic Games at the event.
Short Track: Britain’s top speed skaters had their first competitive fixture of the season, with the National Squad Open Trials taking place at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham.
The final squad selection for the ISU World Cup Series was finalised following the trials. Eight skaters have been selected, and they will travel to Salt Lake City for the opening World Cup on the 7-9 November.
The men’s squad will be made up of Jack Whelbourne, Josh Cheetham, Jon Eley, Richard Shoebridge and Paul Stanley, as well as a new addition in Billy Simms.
Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin will form the women’s squad, with a view to being joined by 18-year-old Kathryn Thomson, who finished in third position at the weekend, later in the season.
Wheelchair Tennis: Eighty budding wheelchair tennis players of all ages took to the courts over the weekend for the Tennis Foundation’s Ticket2Tokyo Talent ID Festivals hosted at 11 venues across the UK.
Launched with support from the Lawn Tennis Association and UK Sport, Ticket2Tokyo aims to attract potential athletes with the desire and dedication to train to become elite athletes and compete for ParalympicsGB at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
