Welsh Zone Championships 2014

Run towards the end of the season in September; this is the most competitive regatta of the year and a must for sailors who are looking to gain places in Regional or National Squad! For those attending their first National Event there is a fully coached regatta fleet.

Welcome to the Welsh Zone Championships 2014 event home page. The event will be hosted this year at Pembrokeshire Yacht Club with racing taking place in Sandy Haven and Gelliswick Bay.

On this page you will find everything you need to know about the event from sailing instructions and accommodation to volunteering to help out at the event.

As with previous years the racing will be run on two race courses:

Main Fleet (Optimist, Topper and GH) – For sailors who are competent at sailing around a trapezoid course and can withstand a whole day out on the water. Welsh National and Regional Squad coaches will be on hand to offer any technical advice on the water.

Windsurfing – This year we will see racing for windsurfers. The racing will be run on the Regatta Fleet race course so that sailors do not have to travel a long distance out to sea.

Regatta Fleet – For sailors who are new to racing or are young. Sailors will be able to go ashore for lunch on Saturday and Sunday and the racing is coached similar to the CYRC’s allowing sailors a little more help to get around the race course.

John Merrick’s Sailing Trust OnBoard Award 2014

jmst ob

The John Merrick’s Sailing Trust in conjunction with the RYA OnBoard scheme are awarding 10 boats to OnBoard sailors showing potential across Britain for the next 5 years.

Last year Thomas Backshall (Clywedog SC) and Huw Farmer (Llangorse SC) were awarded an optimist each after competing in the Welsh Zone Championships in New Quay.

Huw Farmer

Firstly his thoughts are that he gets more sailing in now, he can quickly get his boat ready and it is set up exactly how he wants. He likes taking care of it and rolling the sail up and he does not have to ask any of the coaches at the club about borrowing a boat and which one and there being something wrong with it. He is able to get used to the boat and the power and speed. This is allowing him to sail better and he knows everything works. He is able to sail more often – so is improving quicker. He feels more confident in sailing his boat. He has enjoyed the whole process of winning the boat and being presented it at the dinghy show. It has made Huw feel very special and want to try his best all the time. There has been lots of interest in him and he mentions that everyone seems to be keen for him to do well and offer advice and help him

The sailing boat that I got from the John Merricks Sailing Trust has helped me a lot because it is a proper racing boat and I can now race against all the other racing Optimists. I hope one day that I can become a professional sailor. I think the John Merricks Sailing Trust inspires people to sail, for me it is like having a dream come true.
