Signposting Sustainability for the Recreational Boating Industry

Signposting SustainabilityIn May 2008, the British Marine Federation (BMF) gained certification to Phase 5 of the BS8555 Environment Management System (EMS) standard for their activities as a trade association.

The British standard provides guidance to organisations seeking to implement a formal Environmental Management System, for example ISO 14001.  The standard is targeted at SMEs and it is for that reason that BMF decided to lead the way, showcasing our achievements and acting as a template for our members so they too can deliver an EMS within their organisation, no matter what size of business they are.

The BMF is now delivering its own in-house EMS, following the core principles learnt after certification.

The BMF has taken the core principles of its own EMS and produced an Environment Management System Service for its members.  This will not provide businesses with a third party certification, nor is it a replacement for the BS8555 standard, however it will provide members with the tools to demonstrate effective management of their business within the environment.
