Gold Event Series
The Gold Event Series is UK Sport’s major events programme for the period 2013-2019, and has been developed to help NGBs attract and stage some of the most important international sporting events to the UK, following the successful hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Through the Gold Event Series, UK Sport will invest over £27m of National Lottery funding to help support the bidding and staging of major international sporting events up to 2019. A comprehensive range of new and expanded support services will also be provided to ensure that major events hosted in the UK are delivered to a world-leading standard.
UK Sport will work in partnership with a number of organisations to help support major events in the UK. Principally this means working with the NGBs to identify and prioritise major event hosting targets, and then to support their bidding, financing and delivery. To achieve this, we work closely with a network of event-hosting cities, regions and nations across the UK to help NGBs source venues and develop strong multi-tiered funding partnerships.
Through the Gold Event Series, UK Sport will ensure that supported events deliver four key objectives:
- Support and profile high performance success
- Create high-profile opportunities for people to engage with sport
- Use and demonstrate the legacy of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014
- Drive positive economic and social impacts for the UK
The purpose of launching the Gold Event Series is not only to formalise a range of new support services to NGBs, but also to help recognise and promote the range of incredible major sporting events that the UK will be hosting following London 2012. The introduction of a stronger identity for this group of top-tier events is intended to enhance their domestic recognition, whilst increasing the international sporting community’s awareness of the strong support available to their events when they are hosted in the UK.
The way in which UK Sport identifies strategic hosting targets for the Gold Event Series will remain consistent with its current approach, and a list of priority hosting targets has been operational since 2010, which is reviewed on a regular basis with the NGBs. UK Sport’s events activity is focused primarily around Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth sports and disciplines, with a view to hosting World Championships, European Championships and premium World Circuit events.
