ISAF World Rankings

The ISAF World Sailing Rankings for 19 September 2012 have been released using the new ranking system for fleet racing.
The new calculation system is based on a one year rolling system that includes a simpler format with three possible event grades: 200 pointers, 100 pointers or 50 pointers.

All ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas will be 200-pointers along with the class World Championships and the ISAF Sailing World Championships. A sailor may count a maximum of three results from the World Cup. ISAF Regulation 27 sets out additional criteria for regatta grading. At the 2012 ISAF Annual Conference in November the ISAF Sail Rankings Sub-committee will review the criteria and grading allocation.

Regattas that have taken place since 6 November 2011 (Sail Melbourne) have been re-graded and the new calculation system applied.

Sailors will include their results from the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships and the 2012 Class World Championship as well as three of their best finishes from the 2011-2012 ISAF Sailing World Cup.

World Ranking Leaders - 19 September

Men's 470

Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) top the Men's 470 Rankings following a successful 12 month period that saw them record two third place finishes at the 470 Worlds. Along with their strong performances at three ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas they also add a first place from the 50-pointer Split Olympic Sailing Week.

Women's 470

Japan's Ai Kondo and Wakako Tabata have regained the World #1 spot in the Women's 470 as they count six regattas to their points total. Olympic silver medallists Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) trail Kondo and Tabata by 76 points and just count five regattas to their total.

With two sixth place finishes at the Women's 470 Worlds and strong ISAF Sailing World Cup results Kondo and Tabata came second at the 100 point International 470 Spring Cup in La Seyne sur mer, France to boost their points total.

49er

Denmark's Allan Norregaard moves to World #1 in the 49er Rankings. Norregaard performed consistently with crew Peter Lang in the 12 month build up to London 2012. Norregaard and Lang notched up a fifth and a third at the 2011 and 2012 49er Worlds and three top eight finishes in the 2011-2012 ISAF Sailing World Cup.

After the Olympic Sailing Competition where the pair went on to take bronze at London 2012, Norregaard teamed up with new crew Anders Thomsen at the 49er Europeans where they finished second to add a further 98 points to Norregaard's total.

Although Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) have been the top performers in the 49er class over the last 12 months they only count five regattas and trail the Danes by 18 points.

Laser

Tom Burton (AUS) has moved to the top of the Laser Rankings after a successful 12 month period. Burton proved to be a fantastic training partner for London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby in the build-up to the Games pushing his compatriot all the way. Whilst Slingsby counts just five regattas to sit at World #8, Burton has five top ten finishes from the Laser Worlds and Sailing World Cup as well as a gold medal from the 100-point Australian Laser Championship which gives him top spot.

Laser Radial

With 1,100 points the maximum number available in all rankings Marit Bouwmeester (NED) is bordering on perfection in the Laser Radial and sits on 1,078 at the top. The Olympic silver medallist went into London 2012 with a string of podium finishes exemplified in her points total. Krystal Weir (AUS) trails Bouwmeester by 70 points whilst Paige Railey (USA) is third in the rankings.

Finn

Olympic silver medallist Jonas Hogh-Christensen (DEN) has moved to World #1 in the Finn class following his build up to the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. The Danish sailor impressed at the Finn Gold Cup on both occasions with a fourth at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2012 event in Falmouth, Great Britain. Strong World Cup regattas strengthen his position at the top whilst a regatta victory at the Finn Midwinter Championship in February 2012, a 100 point event, puts him firmly at the top of the tree.

The next ranking release is scheduled for 10 October 2012 which will see the men's and women's kiteboarding events joining the ISAF Sailing World Rankings for the first time. The Nacra17 and 49erFX are set to be introduced into the ISAF Sailing World Cup for the first time throughout the 2012-2013 series and will appear on the rankings following each regatta.
