Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport

Responsibilities

The Secretary of State has overall responsibility for strategy and policy across the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The department’s main policy areas are:

  • arts and culture
  • broadcasting
  • creative industries
  • cultural property, heritage and the historic environment
  • gambling and racing
  • libraries
  • media ownership and mergers
  • museums and galleries
  • the National Lottery
  • sport
  • telecommunications and online
  • tourism

Current role holder: The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP

The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP has been Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport since 9 April 2014. From April to July 2014 he was also Minister for Equalities. Previously he was Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He is the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove.

Education

Sajid attended state schools before studying economics and politics at Exeter University.

Political career

Sajid has been the Member of Parliament for Bromsgrove constituency since being elected in the 2010 General Election. He was a member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee from June to November 2010.

Career outside politics

Before being elected MP, he worked in business and finance. Aged 25, he became a Vice President at Chase Manhattan Bank. He later moved to Deutsche Bank in London to help build its business in emerging market countries. Sajid left Deutsche Bank as a senior Managing Director in the summer of 2009 to give something back through politics.

Personal life

Sajid is married to Laura and they have 4 children.
