Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Sport, Tourism and Equalities

Responsibilities

The Minister for Sport and Equalities is responsible for the following policy areas at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport:

  • sport
  • Olympic and Paralympic legacy
  • gambling and licensing
  • National Lottery
  • same sex marriage
  • Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)
  • equality legislation (including litigation and cases)
  • working with other government departments on violence against women and girls
  • tourism (including GREAT campaign)

Current role holder: Helen Grant MP

Helen Grant is the Minister for Sport, Tourism & Equalities. She is the Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald in Kent.

Education

Helen studied law at Hull University and practised as a family solicitor after qualifying in 1988. She set up Grants Solicitors in 1996, focusing specifically on the problems of family breakdown.

Career

She served on the Justice Select Committee until 2011 and was appointed to the Conservative social justice policy group in 2006. She joined Iain Duncan Smith’s think tank the Centre for Social Justice, for which she has written extensively on family policy.

Personal life

Helen is married with 2 sons.
