Fun and learning for bertholders at Cobb’s Quay Active Marina weekend

Berth holders and their crews from Cobb’s Quay Marina in Poole Harbour’s Upton Lake enjoyed a weekend of activity as part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Active Marina programme.

On Saturday (14 June) a group of Cobb’s Quay ladies spent the day improving their motor boat manoeuvres under the watchful eye of instructor Paul Glatzel of Power Boat Training UK, also based at the marina.

Meanwhile on Sunday (15 June) berthholders enjoyed a small boat cruise to Lymington, in association with Cobb’s Quay Berth Holders Group.

The RYA Active Marina Programme aims to encourage boat owners to get more out of life with their boats by gaining the confidence and skills to leave their berths and get out on the water more often.  It is also a great way for berth holders to get to know each other.

Neil Slater the Marina Manager at Cobb’s Quay said  “The weekend was a great success for Cobb’s Quay, and it is a pleasure to work alongside both a proactive training centre and a solid berth holder group to provide on water activities for our berth holders. We look forward to continuing our range of activities and building upon the community atmosphere we have here at Cobb’s Quay.”

Paul Glatzel of Power Boat Training UK commented “It was fantastic to have twelve very competent and enthusiastic ladies take part in our ‘Between the Bridges Day’ on Saturday. The day was split into two sessions, where we practiced manoevering on our motor cruiser Top Hat. More dates will be added as this is proving to be a very popular activity.”

Fergus Anderson, RYA Active Marina Coordinator  said “Cobb’s Quay is a real pleasure to be able to work with. They are taking the concept of what a marina should provide for their berth holders as part of their berthing arrangements to a new level, more akin to that of what we would normally expect from a yacht club.”

A programme of Active Marina events is taking place in marinas across the south, and indeed the whole UK, to get boat owners and crews fired up about their boating.   The programme encourages and supports increased berth holder activity by partnering with marinas, RYA recognised training centres, berth holder groups and yacht clubs to establish or enhance a programme of training, cruising and social opportunities.
