ANDREW SIMPSON SAILING FOUNDATION
Inspiring the next generation to succeed in
life! Inspired by double Olympic medallist Andrew “Bart” Simpson,
the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation helps young people to develop
their personal skills that will improve their ability to succeed in
life and to improve access to jobs and careers within the maritime
sector. The charity's activity principally focuses on young people
between the age of 5 and 24, and works to realise the opportunities
presented by the unique combination of the challenge of time on the
water with life changing inspiration and encouragement.
Founded by Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, Iain Percy OBE
and Andrew’s wife Leah in 2013, the Foundation honours the life and
legacy of a man who was passionate about encouraging and helping
others fulfil their aims and ambitions. Everything is driven by the
belief that all young people have the ability to succeed and
realise their true potential – with the aim being to ensure
that they have the opportunity.
“Andrew was very passionate about encouraging
youngsters to make the best of the opportunities that they were
given. Through the Foundation’s activities we provide opportunities
to thousands of young people, and those who grasp it with both
hands and show dedication, will be given significant support to
reach their potential in the sport of sailing and also in the wider
maritime industry through apprenticeships.” Iain Percy OBE, 2 x
Olympic Champion and Foundation Trustee.
The Foundation has grown dramatically in its first year due to
the kindness of supporters with many projects taking shape
including the opening of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre at the
Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, which is already
helping to make a real difference to thousands of children, giving
the opportunity to get on the water.
Bart’s Bash, which is a Guinness World
Record breaking attempt at the ‘Largest Sailing Race in the World’
has over 550 clubs taking part on 21 September 2014 and is set
to be a fantastic event. Schools and youth clubs are being
encouraged to get involved with The Foundation's Ambassador
Programme, where an Ambassador of the charity will visit and
give an inspirational talk about goals and ambitions,
plus information about marine businesses related career
options.
