People ask why this #Apollo11 photo Neil took of me is so iconic. I have 3 words to describe it: Location, location, location. #Apollo45

I was in Rome, Italy, and watched it live on RAI TV at the Vietnamese Mission to the Holy See. Hard to believe how long ago that was.

Join +Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour on Monday at 4pm edt for a reading of Sophocles' AJAX – an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior.  This is the 1st in a series of Hangouts that will engage veterans and civilians in discussions about the visible and invisible wounds of war.

#veterans

Outside the Wire, and its partners Massachusetts General Hospital Academy, National Council for Behavioral Health, and Points of Light, are the recent recipients of a generous two-year grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation to present the Soldiers & Citizens Tour to National Guard and Reserve units and their communities across the United States, and continue community engagement using a responsive web-based app and Google Hangouts On Air.

The Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour presents dramatic readings of Sophocles' AJAX – an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior – to diverse military and civilian audiences in order to engage communities in powerful town hall discussions about the visible and invisible wounds of war. The presentations are intended to foster understanding and compassion, while mobilizing citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, and their families and communities.

This reading of AJAX is the first in a series of Google Hangouts On Air presented by the Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour, and features Jay O. Sanders, Maryann Plunkett, and Jamie Sanders. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for information about upcoming Google Hangouts On Air. www.facebook.com/TheaterofWar

The Google Veterans Network is mourning the sudden loss of one of our nation's finest, Steve Robinson, U.S. Army Special Forces Ranger and Advocate #1 for veterans everywhere. As VP for External Veterans Affairs at Prudential, Steve introduced us to many non-profits and other advocates, enabling Google to extend its support to even more veterans and military families, including our friends at +Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. TAPS has created the Steve Robinson Heroes Legacy Fund in his honor, another reason to support this wonderful organization. You can also learn more about Steve in this moving tribute written by his brother, Ken, and posted by our friends at +CBShttp://www.cbs.com/cbs_cares/topics/show/1002635

Thank you for leading the way, Ranger. We will continue the fight in your honor.

70 years ago, brave Americans fought valiantly for freedom on the shores of Normandy. Today, the +Google Cultural Institute honors #DDay70  by uniting collections from France, the U.S. and UK to tell the story of "Operation Neptune" through archives, letters, photos and video - displayed together for the very first time: http://goo.gl/4Ipg2l

On this Memorial Day, we remember our fallen brothers and sisters and recommit to pursuing a life well-lived in their honor. Google would not exist today if it were not for the brave, forever young, and their families, who have given everything to protect our freedoms. We are their debt and so very grateful.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them." - Ode of Remembrance, Lawrence Binyon.

+D Mahaffey thanks for your note. We do honor Memorial Day on the homepage every year with a ribbon or flag - it is one of the only days in the year that we alter the homepage. We wanted it to be more dignified than a Doodle, which as you point out, happens all the time for all kinds of people. Memorial Day is a sacred event for us, and by changing the homepage, we believe it sends an appropriate statement.
