Faster photos import & backup for Chromebook users

Check out +Ben Kwa's post to learn more about the improvements to the Google+ Photos app for Chromebooks.

Import pictures to Google+ Photos faster on your Chromebook

We’re rolling out a faster, simpler way to import and upload your photos to Google+ Photos for Chromebook users:

* We’ve optimized the scanning, importing and backup processes. It's faster and more reliable.
* You can now pause the process at any time -- like when you’re on a slow connection, or giving a killer presentation to your boss.
* You can quickly find your most recently imported photos in a special album called “Last import” in the “Albums” tab.

To get started, just plug a camera or memory card into your Chromebook. Your photos and videos will be safely backed up to Google+ Photos (for your eyes only, of course).  You’ll get notified in the app when the backup is complete and your photos and videos are ready to share.

Get the updated Google+ Photos app for your Chromebook today.

Photo of the Day - August 22, 2014 - +Athena Carey

Well, it is Friday and we're getting to that time to wind down for the weekend. To help with this wonderful weekly event, we're sharing this beautiful portrayal of nature at its finest. Thank you for helping us kick off our weekend on a high note, Athena!

I wanted change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions myself, like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket. ~ Sylvia Plath

It seems like my life is a constant flow of changes, even when I am not trying to make anything change.  I suppose everyone's life is that way though.  If you think about it, how could anything possibly stay the same?  We may as well embrace the opportunity to try new things, visit new places, meet new people, even if it means we may sometimes fail.  I'm still toying with color, although I am not sure yet how I feel about it.  Perhaps it will always be that way - a place I can go to feel a little bit uneasy.  ;)

This is one of the beautiful locations from my project with +Armand Dijcks,  Africa With Athena.  Please visit the website and signup to be notified of updates.  I'm very excited about this  multifaceted project.  :)  www.africawithathena.com

Photo of the Day - August 13th, 2014 - +Hengki Koentjoro

The elegant composition and tonality of this photo is simply wonderful. Hengki does a beautiful job of letting light and shadow sculpt the primary elements of the image, resulting in something that is truly captivating. Brilliant work!

Photo of the Day - July 28th, 2014 - +Armando Martinez

There is something to be said about the specific visual qualities that the #Petzval  lens produces and when you combine them with some truly fine toned black & white processing, you end up with a magical photo. Armando did a really wonderful job bringing a true Western feel and we're especially impressed with his use of shallow depth of field. Nicely done!

Another dreamy look through the #Petzval  lens while in #Moab.

The story behind Stories!

If you love our recently announced Stories here on Google+ as much as we do, then you have to check out the truly wonderful story that +The Atlantic wrote on how Googlers +Joseph Smarr, +Brett Lider, +Clement Ng, and the entire Boswell team came together to help us share our stories in novel and memorable ways.

How 'bout that story?! ;)
Deep inside Google, a small team has been trying to solve a problem that's easy for any schmuck around the watercooler but frighteningly difficult for the world's most data-rich company: telling a story.

Yes, stories is a nice feature to be sure, but G+ needs to address more basic and fundamental issues.

G+ works on the assumption that all photos come from phones and digital cameras.
Many of my photo's were scanned from real photo's so there is no exif data in these.
I need my albums order according to file name, not upload date.

Worst of all, my albums do not appear in order.
Album 1995 will appear next to 2007. Any I can't rearrange their order.

Like most normal people, I organised my stuff into Albums with dates 2015-03-27. But now half my pictures end up under [Autoback-up] and I can not move them into a different folder.

I can't do anything with G+ photos any more - they've taken away any control over my photo's.

Also, if I search for an album, say [2014-01-05] it will not be found.

When it was still Picasa, it was a powerful photo management tool, and I was even considering using it as a life-logging tool as I could add comments to each set of albums - but now all I have is a huge unorganized, unsearchable pile of photos.

Stories is a wonderful idea, but when people don't have control over their data set, they will not appreciated all the good work being done due to frustration with the aforementioned.

Photo of the Day - August 27th, 2014 - +Ted Gore

If you need an example of a photo that masterfully conveys several key compositional concepts, look no further than this beauty by Ted. You've got killer examples of leading lines, light/shadow play, differentiating textures, and contrasting warm and cool tones. All of this adds up to a jaw-dropping landscape photo. Well done, Ted!

Hourglass

An impressive cloud formation passes over the Mesquite sand dunes in Death Valley National Park. I've been lucky to get some pretty interesting conditions the few times I've been to this area. One of my favorite things I've done in the wilderness, is to be comfortably settled into the nice soft sand, watching weather move through the valley. Such a cool place.

Photo of the Day - August 16th, 2014 - +Dave Morrow

As if it were straight out of an adventure storybook, Dave just blows us away with the stunner. Compositionally beautiful with tons of goodies for the eyes. We are especially fond of the atmospheric fog rolling through the mountain ranges in the background. Beautiful work, Dave!

Solo backpacking trip under the Super Moon light - Mount Baker Wilderness, Washington State.

Taken during the Super Moon in August 2014. This particular night there was some nice fog in the valleys. As the Moon rose ( out of the right side of the photo ) it cast rays of light into the valleys and gave a dreamy feel to the entire landscape.

Photo of the Day - August 03rd, 2014 - +Larry Nienkark

If you want a truly great example of illustrating depth and layers using a clever blend of light, shadow and atmosphere, then look no further. Larry executed this shot quite beautifully, especially by introducing a slight angle to the leading line of the frame, drawing the eye right through it, taking in each peak and valley.

Really wonderful stuff, Larry.

First shot from a whirlwind trip to the desert to see some destroyed military planes. Our trip consisted of a gorgeous sunset, getting our car stuck in the sand while trying to hide it from public view, getting it unstuck while being geniuses, hiking a few miles in and out, being yelled at by coyotes, shooting these incredible planes all night under the full moon, then driving home with zero sleep...there and back in 24 hours. I'm still tired.
