Another day of strong mistral winds led to tense hours of waiting again today in Porto Cervo in the second edition of the Jeep Challenge, organized in Italy by Jeep, part of the Daimler Chrysler Group, in collaboration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
The four teams left port at 09:00 this morning with the intention of completing the first, and only round-robin. Winds of around 30 knots, however, forced the Race Committee to bring the teams back in to wait for more favourable conditions. Postponements continued throughout the day until at 18:00 the Race Committee gave the go-ahead for the boats to head for the regatta course in the Gulf of Pevero: the wind had dropped slightly to around 20-25 knots and the boats were finally able to leave the start line, without the use of spinnakers.
The first flight saw
Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team up against
United Internet Team Germany and was won by the Italian crew led by Flavio FAVINI and Vasco VASCOTTO over the Germans skippered by Jesper BANK.
Alinghi, meanwhile, just beat
Luna Rossa Challenge to the finish line.
For the second flight the Race Committee withdrew the Zulu flag and the teams were free to raise the spinnakers. The all-Italian race saw
Luna Rossa beat
Mascalzone Latino -Capitalia Team, while
Alinghi triumphed over
United Internet Team Germany.
The third and final flight saw
Alinghi cross the finish line just ahead of
Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia Team and
Luna Rossa beat
Team Germany.
