Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2005
Busan, Korea

With today's first day of racing completed at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, there is already some upset in the form, with the Youth World rookies upsetting the balance of the more experienced sailors.
Three races were scheduled today, in very light and testing conditions. Racing was delayed this morning and the first race started at approx 1400 hours in 2-4 knots of breeze from the south west. The wind gradually increased and the competitors had more moderate wind conditions for the second race in 8-12 knots of breeze, the wind dropped off for the third race back down to 5-7 knots.

Single-handed Dinghy Girls - Laser Radial

In the 31 strong Laser Radial fleet , as was to be expected, it is Paige RAILEY (USA) who has immediately demonstrated her superiority over her competitors after today's opening three races. Whilst Paige claimed two of the three races, it was China's Xu LIJIA who was snapping at Paige's heels all the time, but has been upset in the overall placings due to an OCS in today's third race. But with a scoreline of 2,1 in the first two races, expect Xu to be propelled back up the leaderboard when the discards come into play.

A great opening day for Stephanie ROSSE (SUI) who together with Paige has set herself apart from the rest of the fleet with a 10 point buffer over the third placed Alberte HOLM LINDBERG (DEN).

Single-handed Dinghy Boys - Laser

With 35 entries, the single-handed dinghy boys event is the largest fleet at the Championship. An excellent start sees Spain's Jorge JOVER just ahead of one of the Championship's pre-race favourites Jean-Baptiste BERNAZ (FRA). There are quite a few experienced Youth Worlds competitors in Korea, and after the first day's nerves settle down, it is likely we will see them start to put in some consistent placings and demonstrate their superior experience.

Double-handed Dinghy Girls - 420

The double-handed dinghy girls fleet only managed one race today, and all eyes were set to be on sisters Stephanie FLUKES and Emma FLUKES who are trying to defend Australia's longstanding prowess in the event. However, after one race it is the record holders in the double-handed event, France who has set the pace. No nation has won more medals in the double-handed dinghy events than the 19 won by the six times winners of the Volvo Nations Cup, France.Marie LUMEAU and Claire BOSSARD (FRA) have made a strong start and a clear indicator of where they want to be by the end of the Championship, and with this start will certainly be improving on their ninth place overall in Gdynia, Poland last year.

Double-handed Dinghy Boys - 420

A huge depth of Youth Worlds' experience in the double-handed dinghy boys event, and as in the girls event, it is the Australian crews who are looking to defend the title held by their nation. Consistent racing from Tomas SILVA and Francisco GOMES (POR) puts them with a nice 5 point margin after the opening day, but it is very early to predict anything. Japan will be delighted with their early show of form from Wataru SAITO and Hiroto YOSHINAGA including a bullet in race 3. An excellent start for the home team of Soo-Hyung SEO and Sung-min JO (KOR) with a bullet in race 1.

It is surprising after this first day, not to see some of the more experienced sailors within the top ten, such as Israel's Amit BROKMAN and Ben ESHEL who finished eighth in Gdynia last year, and Ricky ROBERTSON and Brennan ROBINSON (RSA). So far it is the Youth Worlds rookies who are setting the pace.

Windsurfer Girls - Mistral

The 14 strong windsurfer girls fleet sees some high flyers and Olympians in the fleet. Bronze medallist at the 2004 Youth Worlds Laura LINARES (ITA) has had an excellent start. But, she will be hard pushed by Blanca MANCHON (ESP) and Sophie LE PLAGE (FRA). Both are past Youth Worlds performers, with Blanca having the added experience of representing her nation at the Olympics in Athens, where she placed eighth. A bullet for Blanca and a bullet for Israel's Maayan DAVIDOIVCH, who placed fifth overall last years, shows their form. Whilst a small fleet of just fourteen entries, it will be one of the toughtest events to win amongst such a high quality and experienced field.

Windsurfer Boys - Mistral

17 nations in the windsurfer boys fleet, and it is Poland who takes the double bullet in today's two races with Lukasz GRODZICKI putting in an outstanding performance.

Juan Manuel MORENO (ESP) will be pleased to finish the first day in third overall. He could only manage 14th last year but has had some of the most impressive results of the men's fleet this year, finishing 21st at the Mistral Worlds and second at the European Youth Championship.

A great first day for some of the Asian nations, with Hong Kong and China up in the top 10.

Just outside the top ten and sitting in twelth overall, after a third and an OCS, is Nimrod MASHIAH (ISR). Nimrod is one of the fleet who on form will be at the forefront of the challenge for gold, having taken the silver medal last year after finishing second in the final race.

Multihull Open - Hobie 16

In only it's third year at the ISAF Youth Worlds, the Multihull open event sailed in Hobie 16s consolidates it's position at the Championship with eleven teams once again set to fight it out for the title. In a unique occurrence for this year's Championship, the gold, silver and bronze medallists from the 2004 ISAF Youth Worlds in Gdynia, Poland are all returning, with Tom PHIPPS and Jon COOK (GBR) the only defending champions in Busan.

This time last year and the French pair of Julien VILLION and Martin BATAILLE did not finish the first race, so they will have been pleased to put that skeleton well and truly behind them and take the bullet today.

A mixed bag of results, with most crews outside of the top three, placing a high and a low result. The form is there, but this fleet has huge experience and as last year, it is already possible to predict that the fight for podium places will go down to the wire.
