Paula Lewin's previous background is as match racer and she is currently ranked 27th on the ISAF Women's World Match Race Rankings, although did reach her highest position of 8th in October 2001. However, with her sights firmly set on Athens 2004, she has gone down the match race rankings, and moved up the ISAF World Sailing Rankings in the Yngling Class. Having sat at 15th in the world for over 6 months, her results of an 8th at last year's ISAF Grade 1 Athens Test Event, a 7th at the Grade 1 Miami OCR combined with a 3rd at the ISAF Grade 2 Ocean Regatta earlier this year have seen Paula shoot up the ISAF World Sailing Rankings to sit 7th overall in the world. With Bermuda qualified for the 2004 Olympic Regatta, and Paula and crew a virtual certainty to fill the slot, all is set for Bermuda's assault on the medals.

Peter Bromby, fresh from victory at the Star Class Bacardi Cup, will be delighted with this news. Matching the performance in the Yngling, Bermuda has also already qualified for a slot in the Star Class event at the 2004 Olympic Regatta, and with a ranking of 5th in the World as well as being the only Bermuda crew in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, Bromby's selection looks fairly secure, providing he meets any criteria set by the Bermudan National Olympic Committee. Bromby has retained a top 10 ISAF World Sailing Ranking for the past two years, claiming the number two spot for one ranking release at the end of August last year, before dropping back. His recent first place at Rolex Miami OCR, which he last won in 1995, will certainly propel him up the World Rankings.

No stranger to the Olympic circuit, Bromby finished fourth at the 2000 Olympics with crew Lee White.


The Olympic Solidarity Athens 2004 Scholarships provide athletes with financial support to fulfil the necessary training and participation in events in their preparation for the 2004 Olympics. Olympic Solidarity considers applications received, which are then approved in each country based on the potential of the applying athlete, the number of applicants across the sports in that country and the total number of applicants from that country.

Depending on the application made by the sailor, and where he/she wishes to train, effects the scholarship funding offered.

ISAF is delighted that a total of fourteen sailors are benefiting from Olympic Solidarity Scholarships and wishes them all well in their Olympic Campaigns.
