After a 20 knot squall knocked the teams around in the first few races of day three, the wind dwindled down to a drifting 5 knots before the southeasterly eventually came back at a consistent 18 knots. This oscillating breeze made for some exciting racing with hearts throbbing in anticipation of who would last the day.

Over the three days of competition 90 races were completed. The experienced Tripod team were put to the test but eventually nailed their place in Australian team racing history.

Heading To Spain

After gaining a second place, Blair SPAULDING from Royal Tasmania Yacht Club was disappointed with the placing however, he and his team were exciting they would still be representing Australia in the under 21 division at the upcoming ISAF Team Racing World Championship, hosted by the Real Club Nautico Gandia in Valencia, Spain, from 23-29 September 2007.

'We would have loved to have won this year, but Luc TASKER and his team were just too strong for us,' said SPAULDING. 'But it's all good, we are off to the Worlds and we are extremely happy with that'.

TASKER said the team he sailed with this year was an experience in itself. 'Rod CHAMBERLIND, Chris KAMEEN and our crews, Tim RECHICHI, Liz NEEVY and Emma FLUKES were awesome to race with. The experience these guys have is incredible and it's been great to race with them,' said TASKER.

Local Team Third

Local team Yachting Queensland placed third in the championship however may still be eligible to travel to Spain with Tripod and Royal Tasmania Yacht Club after receiving a wild card entry into the event.

'If we do in fact get to go it will be a huge achievement for us. We have been training together since 2005 now, so it would be great to experience a World Championship as a team,' said Captain Leah GALLAGHER.

The Yachting Australia board will determine selection for the teams prior to them travelling to Spain.

This was the final Team Racing event for Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for the next five months before the season opens again with the Term 4 Secondary Schools Competition.
