Independence Cup
Chicago

After three days of exciting races on Lake Michigan, the U.S. Independence Cup has been completed and new champions have been crowned. The last day of racing ended with tie-breakers deciding the second and third place finishers in both divisions.
Paul TINGLEY (CAN) won the 2.4mR class and US SAILING's Judd Goldman Trophy after taking the lead on the first day of racing. In close second place was fellow Canadian Bruce MILLAR narrowly beating Tom FRANKLIN (USA) in a tie-breaker.

"It feels just great to have been able to travel to Chicago to participate in this event which is so well-known in disabled sailor circles," said Tingley. "I've been training for it for a while and I consider myself lucky to be here."

In the double-handed division, which is raced in Freedom Independence 20's, Karen MITCHELL and Kerry GRUSON (USA) finished in first place and received US SAILING's Chandler Hovey, Jr. Trophy. As in the single-handed division, another tie-breaker decided the second and third place winners: Tim FLYNN and Paul CHOQUETTE (USA) took second place while fellow Rhode Islanders Joe GUAY and Paul CORMIER took third.

"I'm pleased to congratulate the winners along with all who raced in the event," said Robert SMITH, chairman of the event at the Chicago Yacht Club. "Not only did these athletes do a great job over the last three days meeting the challenges of the often unpredictable conditions on Lake Michigan, they also engaged in an exciting, highly strategic competition among the best disabled sailors in all of North America."
