Youth Travellers at Derwent

It has been a busy year for Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club and the summer events are still progressing. The RS Tera Nationals will be Friday 22 to Monday 25 August and on Saturday 30 August the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship roars on to the water.

Earlier this month the club hosted the final event and prize giving of the RYA North East 2014 Youth Travellers Series; an event which has a great pedigree in bringing about future National and World Champions. The 2014 series toured the north east from March to August, calling in at clubs such as Ripon, Scaling Dam and Teesdale in the south of the region, to Kielder, South Shields and Tynemouth towards the north.

Over 25 races in total were sailed and 83 competitors took part. "We had a very good turnout this year," said series organiser, Judith Corry. "The standard was very high and the young sailors coped with all sorts of weather, from snow flurries in March to lovely sunshine today!"

Winner of the RYA North East Youth Travellers Series Championship 2014 was 15 year old James Moore from Gateshead. James, who attends Emmanuel College, Gateshead and is a member of Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, has competed in the NE Youth Travellers Series over previous years. "This is the first time I have won the overall series," said James after the prize-giving. "I'm really proud to have won it. It will be difficult next year because I have my GCSEs coming up, so to win it this year is great."

Winner of the Newcomer Trophy was 13 year old Ollie Blake from South Shields. Ollie attends Whitburn Church of England Academy and is also a member of Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club. This is Ollie's third year of sailing so to compete at this level so soon is a huge achievement.

"This is an important and fantastically supported event in the north east sailing calendar," said RYA North East Regional Chairman, Steve Gibbon, when he presented the prizes. "A lot of effort goes into making this event successful; parents, clubs and race officials, but mainly our young sailors, over 80 of them this year."

"These young sailors are the future of our clubs and sport and they are a credit to their parents, their clubs and the Region. Well done to every one of them for taking part so enthusiastically."
