Make A Real Difference In RYA West Midlands

Nominations re-open for regional committee roles and we want YOU!

Are you passionate and enthusiastic about getting and keeping more people boating, and protecting the interests of those people who, exactly like you, are already avidly committed to the sport in our region?

This is YOUR opportunity to make a real, hands-on difference to the direction and success of our sport not only within the West Midlands but nationally as nominations re-open for the RYA West Midland Regional Committee.

Forget everything you think you know about regional RYA committees....

In line with the RYA Strategy 2013-1017, regional committees have been handed a very clear, proactive and defined role, integral in helping the RYA achieve its overall strategic aim of becoming more relevant to more boating communities in order to be more representative and influential.

What does this mean in real terms?

  • You know how you feel about your sport? We want more people across a wider-cross section of the boating community to regularly feel like you do.
  • You know how the RYA helps your club to inspire more people to take part more often? We want more clubs to make the most of these opportunities.
  • You know you read about what the RYA is doing nationally to protect your boating interests? You can help influence what direction these policies go in.

Didn’t we have an election earlier this year?

Yes we did, in February.

However the response was very disappointing and it was felt we had a wide range of talents and abilities across the West Midlands who could make such a difference to our sport that we would give everyone another chance to get involved.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking from RYA affiliated clubs in the West Midlands nominations for candidates for the roles:

  • Chairman
  • Deputy Chairman
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Up to 10 standing members of the Regional Committee.

Download details about the roles and responsibilities for each position to the right.

All clubs are encouraged to nominate a maximum of two candidates for election.

Each candidate must be a full member of the club nominating them. Candidates for the role of Chairman must be RYA personal members as the Chairman will be ex-officio the Regional Committee’s representative on the RYA Council.

The Nomination form can be downloaded to the right – all nominations must be received by WEDNESDAY 23 JULY.

A list of candidates, together with voting forms, will be circulated to all affiliated West Midlands clubs at least 28 days before the next General Meeting on Saturday 4 October 2014.

The results of the election will be announced at the General Meeting.

What they say

Owain Franks, Deputy Chairman of the RYA:

“The RYA Strategy 2013-2017 has four pillars of activity, membership, performance, participation and training. RYA Regional Committees have a key, strong and pro-active role in supporting and inputting to the programmes and people who underpin those pillars. Regional Chairs also form a key constituency in the RYA Council.

“To make the most of the outputs from Regional Committees we really do need a broader base of diverse experience and deeper engagement within each region, with closer alignment of regional volunteers and staff working to articulate and deliver clear and consistent purpose for each region that is fully integrated into strategy.

“These elections are the next step in the West Midlands fulfilling its potential in contributing to the future health and vibrancy of our sport regionally and nationally.”
