470 Men Going for Gold

Sailors Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell are ready to go for gold at their first Olympic Games at Weymouth and Portland tomorrow (Thursday 9 August).

The Brits, who sail the men’s two-person dinghy, are already guaranteed a Games debut silver medal having put a big enough distance between themselves and Lucas Calabrese and Juan de la Fuente (ARG) currently in bronze medal position.

But for Patience and Bithell the race is all about beating the Australian leaders, Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page, and claiming that gold medal.

Just four points separate the Aussies and the Brits. With every placing worth two points in the medal race, Patience and Bithell have to finish ahead of Belcher and Page, with at least one boat in between them.

The Men’s 470 medal race is scheduled for Thursday 9 August (1pm).

The Olympic Sailing Regatta runs from Sunday 29 July – Saturday 11 August.
