Bryony in Hunt With Another Solid Day
Windsurfer Bryony Shaw was pleased with another “solid” day at the end of day four of the Olympic Sailing Regatta at Weymouth and Portland today (Wednesday 1 August).
The Beijing 2008 bronze medallist maintained her position in sixth overall in the Women’s RS:X event after four races as she scored a fourth and a ninth today.
Shaw showed great resolve to bounce back from a start line penalty on the opening race of the day to pull up from eight at the first mark to fourth at the finish. But with the fleet splitting in race two the 29-year-old couldn’t find the line she needed to make a big impact on the scoreboard.
Shaw sits 10 points off the medal places but with their discard to kick in at the next race, the 29-year-old could see that gap close with a good score in race five.
She said: “It was a tricky day, we were in the harbour and the wind kept flicking either side of Portland so there were lots of big holes and gusts. The first race could have been a disaster; there was close soft contact with the French girl on the start line and she called protest against me so I did my turns and was basically last off the start line. It was quite a good comeback to fourth, my speed was pretty good.
“In the second race the fleet positioning was quite tricky. Rather than sailing as a pack we all split off crossing each other up the beat so it was hard to know where you were. It was a bit of a shame not to be in the top three, it was solid day though.
“I think a couple of my close rivals had some high scores in the first race but I’m just trying to stick to my game and just hoping that I get a few races inside the top three.”
The RS:X Women (race five and six) are scheduled to resume at 2pm tomorrow (Thursday 2 August) on the Portland Harbour course.
The Olympic Sailing Regatta runs from Sunday 29 July – Saturday 11 August. The RS:X Women’s medal race is scheduled for Tuesday 7 August (2pm).
