Match Race Girls Continue Steady Start
It was a case of déjà vu for Britain’s Match Race Girls as they enjoyed a mirror of their opening day scores on day two of the Olympic Regatta.
The trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and KateMacgregor beat the Portugal team of Rita Gonçalves, Mariana Lobato, Diana Neves in race one before slipping to defeat against the dominant Olivia Price-skippered Australian threesome, who have a 100 per cent record in from their four races at this event so far.
Women’s Match Racing takes place in Elliott 6m keelboats. Match racing sees two identical boats racing against each other in a series of one-on-one duels, progressing through round robin and knockout phases before the top two boats fight it out for the gold and silver medals. There are 12 nations contesting the event.
The Brits now sit with a 50% score card with two wins and two losses.
Lucy Macgregor said: “We won our first race, but were a bit disappointed with the last race, so have ended the day with a bit of a disappointing feeling. The crowds have been awesome, even when we were losing there were still cheers. We’re here to do a job and the best way to do that job is to come away with a medal.”
Women’s Match Racing is making its event debut at London 2012 with the Poole-based trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor also competing at their first Games.
Match racers are in action on more days than any other class and are not only one of the first classes to start but the last class to finish, with the match racing final bringing the curtain down on the 2012 Olympic Regatta on Saturday 11 August.
Racing in the Elliott 6m class is scheduled to resume tomorrow (Tuesday 31 July) at 1.30pm.
