Hands On Disaster Response is energized to help Gonaives, Haiti recover from the devastating effects of 4 successive tropical storms and hurricanes. One thing is for certain – there will be barrels and barrels of great dirty HODR work! We will begin accepting volunteers at our base on 10 October, 2008.

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008Our Hurricane Ike assessment team evaluated damage and response levels in the coastal communities of both Texas and Louisiana. We assessed the needs that are present now and those that may arise in the coming weeks. In order to obtain the most accurate information possible, we met with numerous area emergency officials, church pastors, mayors, community members and representatives from other responding relief organizations.

Hurricane Gustav: Update 2
Thursday, September 4th, 2008Due to the levels of reported damage HODR has not deployed an assessment team to the areas affected by Hurricane Gustav and do not plan to at this time. If we become aware of a significant pocket of need and/or damage we would consider sending a team to assess the situation.
We are currently engaged in a successful flood relief project in Cedar Rapids, Iowa until October 25, 2008. From Project Cedar Rapids we will continue to monitor the other storms on the horizon and their impact in the coming weeks.
Hurricane Gustav
Monday, September 1st, 2008HODR is watching the progress of Gustav; since we are not a Search & Rescue operation we will decide about 24 hours after landfall whether a response is appropriate, then potentially send an assessment team which would be in the area within the next 48 hours.
We will post updates on this site, and send out a blast e-mail if we launch an assessment and/or project. Check our Twitter blog for more frequent mini-updates on our status on Gustav and Project Cedar Rapids.
