April Showers…
Over the past week Tennessee has experienced unprecedented spring storms, saturating the ground and causing rivers to crest at historic levels. Parts of Tennessee have received upwards of 12” of rainfall during the most concentrated periods of the storm. On Tuesday, the flooding in Tennessee was a declared a federal disaster and as of today (5/7/2010) 27 counties fall under that declaration.
HODR is monitoring the situation closely, making contacts on the ground with local Emergency Management as well as being present on daily state VOAD calls. We are current gathering information and trying to ascertain if an on ground HODR assessment is warranted. While we know that the affects of the flooding extend beyond Nashville, quantifiable data on the extent of the damage is unknown at this time.
We will continue to work on gathering as much information as possible to make an informed decision on assessing — if a decision is made to move forward with an assessment we will post additional updates.

On Saturday, April 24, 2010 a tornado system swept through several states in the Southern U.S. According to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour in an article by the Washington Post, “about 100 homes in Yazoo County [Mississippi] and 38 in Choctaw County are not livable.”
HODR is monitoring the situation. We are in dialogue with local contacts and partner organizations, and will be on calls with Mississippi VOAD. We will post more information here if a HODR assessment develops.
A 6.9 earthquake struck China’s Qinghai province early on Wednesday morning, killing hundreds of people and leaving thousands injured. The Chinese government has quickly responded with significant search and rescue, medical, and army resources. At this time HODR will not launch an assessment or response project, recognizing the government’s significant resources and experience in disaster management.
HODR launched an extensive assessment following the Sichuan earthquake in China in May 2008. While we found warm communities and many opportunities for HODR to plug in, the government also maintained tight control over access and the situation on the ground. Qinghai is in close proximity to Tibetan areas and autonomous regions; we believe the government will again exercise its control over activities, news, and images coming from area.
The remote location, altitude, and harsh climate will make this a challenging rescue and recovery effort; the influx of rescue workers has already taxed the limited supplies of food, water, and gas available in the area. We offer our solidarity and support to the Chinese and anticipate their strong, capable response.

Tire Business staff report
BUFFALO, N.Y. (March 11, 2010) — Dunn Tire L.L.C. and its customers have raised $83,648 to aid victims of the Jan. 12 Haiti earthquake.
On March 5 Dunn Tire Chairman Randall Clark presented the check to Hands On Disaster Response to support the nonprofit organization’s relief efforts in Haiti, where its volunteers are helping residents with such projects as clearing rubble of collapsed homes and building shelters and classrooms.
During its fundraiser, Dunn Tire contributed $5 for every tire sold between Jan. 16 and Feb. 14 at its 29 stores in western and central New York and northern Pennsylvania. The dealership also collected donations from the public and gave anyone who contributed $10 or more a free state vehicle inspection or a $10 discount.
About $10,000 came from public donations, some from customers and others from walk-ins who had heard the dealership’s radio spots promoting the fundraiser.
“When we say ‘Dunn Tire Cares,’ it’s not just words, it’s our fundamental corporate philosophy, and we translate our beliefs into actionable items and tangible results as often as we can. Our annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign and holiday food drives are other examples,” Mr. Clark said.
“The stories of generosity from our community are heartwarming,” he added. “We had a 9-year-old girl come into one of our stores in Rochester (N.Y.) with her mom. She brought us all of her allowance money—$9—because she said she wanted to help the people that didn’t have homes anymore.”
On Saturday February 27, 2010 an 8.8 earthquake struck Chile.
The United Nations confirmed Monday, March 1 that Chile had requested assistance and the UN was ready to help. Chile asked for mobile bridges, field hospitals with dialysis centers, satellite phones, electric generators, salt water purification systems and field kitchens, according to Elizabeth Byrs of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Megan Mattson said the Chilean government “has not yet accepted additional offers of assistance, pending the completion of an assessment of specific needs.” She noted Santiago’s airport remained closed to foreign aid.
At this time, based on HODR’s current engagements in Indonesia and Haiti, we are not planning to send an assessment team.
