X-Dream still has 120 miles to Shionomisaki and TMQ Marine has 300 miles, and with the fleet being plagued by fairly light winds, their finish time will be sometime next week.

The food situation is now getting to the stage where we both feel sick at the thought of it. The idea of 'only a few days to go' does not seem to work, as our ETA is continually re-adjusted to a later time and date, as we hit pockets of no wind. A few days ago we looked quite good; doing 10 knots and well on the way to finishing on Saturday afternoon. We were even gaining considerably on the 3 yachts in front, leading us to believe that we would have a chance to take them out. Then suddenly we hit a pocket with no wind for nearly a day, and despite of launching the correct sails, we only manage to get around the 3 to 4 knot mark in speed.

Ivan sat on the head (toilet) this morning, finally thinking what my stomach has been telling me for days now: "if I have to have another cold army ration meal, I am going to be sick". He looked at the switch of the pump in the toilet and suddenly it came to him: There is a spark behind that switch in the box!

So, out came the cooking tongs, we wrapped 2 leaves of toilet paper soaked in mentholated spirits around the tongs and used the two wires in the switch box after dismantling it, to try and light the toilet paper. It took us about 10 minutes and suddenly we had a ball of fire at the end of the tongs!

We both grinned, and immediately got the metho cooker ready, so as not to waste this opportunity.

Minutes later, I was able to throw together a very simple recipe, that made both of us feel like we were eating in an Italian Restaurant. There wasn't much left, but it was enough to make us feel like kings! I boiled up some pasta, added a tin of mushrooms, broke up the contents of a tin of salmon and added a jar of 'Five Brothers' Romano and Garlic pasta sauce.
