Lighter Winds Present New Challenge

Day three at the ISAF Grade C1 RS:X European Championships saw the men's gold fleet decided, with Nick DEMPSEY (GBR) continuing to lead the charge in Alacati, Turkey. Meanwhile in the women's fleet Antonia FREY (GRE) capitalized on the inconsistency of her rivals in lighter winds to move clear at the top.
As dawn broke the skies were unexpectedly overcast and the wind very light. The womens fleet was to start first with two races back to back, whilst the gold and silver split for the men would have alternate races later in the day. The pressure was also on with day three the last day of qualifying before the men's fleets are decided for the finals rounds.
The women started on time in eight to ten knots of breeze. If FREY shone on Sunday, then yesterday she was even better, taking a big step towards her first ISAF Graded event victory in the RS:X. FREY moved ten points clear at the top with a fifth and a third place, showing she has all gears in more than one set of conditions. Out of the top five women only Pauline PERRIN (FRA) also scored a top five finish, with the rest left in the teens.
Maayan DAVIDOVICH (ISR) was the next most consistent women, revelling in the light conditions scoring a second and a sixth. Flavia TARTAGLINI (ITA) was also strong in the lighter conditions to take the bullet in the first race of the day, whilst Wai Kei CHAN (HGK) scored a win in the last race.
British French Battle
Two stand outs making their way to the men's gold fleet are DEMPSEY and Nicolas HUGUET (FRA). DEMPSEY scored a second and a seventh and is three points ahead of his French rivals who finished the day with a fourth and a bullet. During the last reach to the gate a furious, jibing, covering match between Przememek MIARCZYNSKI (POL) and HUGUET had most spectators gasping for air.
At times only a metre or two seperated them. Close to twelve jibes, one on top of the other, saw MIARCZYNSKI briefly take the lead, only to be passed on the last leg of the slalom finish.
MIARCZYNSKI's team mate Piotr MYSZKA (POL) also impressed yesterday with a 4,1 scoreline putting him third overall.
