Day One
420 Junior European Championship
Dun Laoghaire
George VASSILAS with Evangelos MITAKIZ from Greece took the overall lead of the Liffey Developments 420 Junior European Championships on Dublin Bay yesterday (Monday) in close to ideal conditions.
Sailing three races due to the cancellation of Sunday's opening round due to gales, yesterday saw a steady south-easterly breeze all day with fog for the first race providing an added challenge to the 79 crews from 16 nations.
Vassilas and Mitakiz sailed consistently to score a first and two thirds. Of the host nation's double-size squad, Simon MITTON and Cillian MAGEE placed best at 24 overall.
Splits for the Gold and Silver fleets will be made after Race Six with the eleven race finals starting on Wednesday.
