Fernando ECHAVARRI and Antón PAZ (ESP) and Ellen MACARTHUR (GBR) were crowned with the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards in Singapore on Tuesday 8 November. The World's top sailors left their oilskins behind and donned their black ties and high heels for a Gala Presentation and Dinner hosted by triple Olympic medallist Alessandra SENSINI (ITA).
Male Award winners Fernando
ECHAVARRI and Antón PAZ arrived in Singapore on Tuesday morning, but showing no sign of jet lag were on top form as they spent the day modesty playing down their achievements. For the Spanish pair winning the Award was
'a dream' a fitting end to an incredible year. Unfortunately Ellen MACARTHUR could not make it to Singapore, although provided a passable excuse in the form of participation in the Transat Jacques Vabre, which left her in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, and about as far away from the glamour of Singapore as could be.
Despite MACARTHUR's absence, the stars of the sailing world were well represented with legends like Peter GILMOUR (AUS), Bruno PEYRON (FRA) and Sofia BEKATOROU (GRE) mingling with emerging talents like Blanca MANCHÓN (ESP) and Rohan VEAL (AUS). And of course there was the expected role call of dignitaries, lead by ISAF President Göran PETERSSON (SWE), ISAF President of Honour HM King Constantine and Singapore Minister for Defence Teo Chee HEAN.
