Etchells World Championship
Auckland

Brisk westerlies continued this morning on Gulf Harbour for Day 2 of the 2002 Waiwera Infinity Water Etchells World's in Auckland New Zealand.

Picking the left for more pressure, Stuart Childerley (GBR), the 2001 World Champion sailed into a morning race victory in 15-20 knot winds ahead of Gavin Brady and Cameron Miles.

With a very long start line, around 1000 metres, picking the right end of the line was very critical. The breeze favoured the left. The boats that went right were hammered and these included a couple of notables including Dennis Conner and Michael Coxon, who both finished in the forties

Yesterday's leader Mark Bradford (AUS), the young Brisbane sail maker was 54th at the second mark, after an early move to the right. By working the left for more pressure he managed to climb back to 13th place. He still manages to cling onto second place overall after three races with his two first day wins.

Cameron Thorpe (NZL) holds onto third place after a 6th this morning.

The cream is rising to the top as some famous Etchells sailors move up the fleet. John Bertrand has climbed into 5th place with an 11th, Cameron Miles is 6th and Dennis Conner's Kiwi Menace III is 9th behind Iain Murray's Kaenon

This afternoon the fleet assembled in the starting area with winds averaging 30 knots, with a nasty short chop. With some solid gusts come through the big fleet, things were already a little out of control, with a number of near collisions and some broken backstays.

Race organisers called a postponement, hoping for winds to ease, but a severe rain squall came through the Gulf Harbour at the 5 minute gun. With prospects of zero visibility PRO John Parish wisely abandoned racing for the day. Tomorrow is a lay day, actually a designated Golf Day.
