Heinz Staudt first became involved with sailing within the Deutscher Segler Verband as a Committee Member back in 1972, as a member of their Olympic Sailing Committee.

Three years later, Heinz joined ISAF as a member of the Centreboard Boat Committee, where he remained a member until 1990.

A year later in 1976, Heinz became the 470 representative on the International Classes Committee, a position he held through until this year and in 1997, Heinz became a member of the Boardsailing Committee, where he served for four years.

Since 2000, Heinz has been a member of the Measurement Committee.

However, Heinz's contribution to the sport has by no means been restricted to his considerable committee work.

He has been both an International Judge and International Measurer since 1981, and was a jury member for the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, and Chief Measurer of the 470 Class at the Olympic Regatta for 1992, 1996 and most recently Sydney 2000.

Heinz's considerable work at the German Sailing Federation, Deutscher Segler Verband, has also encompassed being a member of the Racing Committee, Committee for International Affairs, Technical Committee, Classes Committee and the Council.

However, we all most probably know Heinz best through his involvement with the International 470 Class.

He originally became involved as the President of the 470 National Class Association in German from 1971 through until 1991. In 1973, he moved on to become President of the European District. 1975 saw him become Vice President of the International 470 Class Association. Seven years later he became President.

That was in 1982. Heinz is renowned throughout the sailing and Olympic world for his commitment to the 470 Class, a commitment which no doubt was also instrumental in the 470 Class being selected to be used at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada.

It is now twenty years later and Heinz continues to give his support, both to the International Sailing Federation and the Sport of Sailing as a whole.
