Warren Jones Youth Regatta
Perth, Australia

Young New Zealand skipper Simon MINORPRIO has won the Warren Jones Youth Regatta for the second year in succession, beating Sydney's Michael DUNSTAN in a cliff-hanger final, that went to the wire.
Minoprio and his crew, representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, secured their place in the final with two convincing wins at the end of the double round robin part of this match racing series.

The final was a replay of last year's final, only Dunstan put up a much harder fight this year, after being beaten in two straight races a year ago.

A delighted Minoprio said, 'it's very good to defend the cup back to back, it's always good to defend your title,' this was after being thrown in the river by his crew.

He paid tribute to his opponents, saying 'throughout the week it has been very challenging, because the sailors have all stepped up alot since last year, especially the young ones like Seve JARVIN.'

Seve JARVIN of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, is in his first year as a match race skipper, and finished third in the event, winning the sail off for third place against the considerably more experienced Kiwi, Laurie JURIE.

In the best of three final Simon MINOPRIO took the first heat by 1 second, but Dunstan came back to level the score in a very tight second heat, by just one boat's length.

In the decider both skippers tested their crews to the limit, with the two boats going around the course as if attached by elastic, in the end it was a desperate tactical move by Dunstan right on the finishing line, that cost him a penalty and the race.

The Sydney skipper was upbeat, despite his defeat, 'we've had a ball here in Perth this week, but obviously we're a bit disappointed in the result. At the end we fouled Minoprio, and it would have taken something pretty special to win after that,' he admitted.

Competition on the final day started with a fitful and shifty easterly breeze ruffling Perth's Swan River, then in the afternoon a 10 knot seabreeze established itself, providing ideal conditions for the finals.

The Warren Jones Youth Regatta is organised by the Western Australian Yachting Foundation, and was hosted by the Royal Perth Yacht Club in conjunction with the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.
