Chieffi from the Oracle racing syndicate gained a 3-1 victory over Paolo Cian from the Mascalzone Latino team, valid for a place in the quarter finals. The regulations for the races hosted by the Yacht Club Adriaco, and constructed for the next Louis Vuitton Cup for the challengers for the Americas Cup, have the eight challenging teams confront each other over the best of five regattas, in a direct elimination formula on a windward leeward course a short distance from the seafront of Trieste. The winners go to the semi finals, while the second place teams enter in a knockout series over a best of three formula to gain the third place.

After the withdrawal of the Prada Challenge team (due to a change in their training programme), a Slovenian team has been included in the Nations Cup, captained by Mitija Kosmina. During the afternoon races the Slovenians were up against Peter Gilmour of the Oneworld racing team from Seattle, but after only just one race won by the Americans the races had to be stopped due to the breaking of the gennaker of the Slovenian boat, but will be restarted in the morning. The following races will be between the second Oneworld syndicate of Kelvin Harrap, and Alinghi Swiss Challenge of Murray Jones. The afternoon race participants will be Paul Cayard, who like Chieffi is of the Oracle team colours, and the home team who's skipper is Furio Benussi.
