Race committees on 7 different courses on the outer Kiel Fjord pushed for 2 to 3 races in the 11 Olympic disciplines in the second part of Kiel Week 2001, - despite moderate and shifty winds 7 to 10 knots from West/North West.

The double lead in the 49er Class share the British teams Paul Brotherton/Simon Hiscocks and Ian Barker/Harvey Hilary with overall even 4 points; in 3rd position follow the Germans Marcus Baur/Andreas John who scored 7 points overall in today's 3 races.

Ladies first ... on the 470 Men and Women course: impressive performance of the Greek 2000 World Champions Sofia Bekatorou/Emilia Tsoulfa, who led their dinghy to victory in today's all 3 races! Stefanie Rothweiler/Monika Leu, GER finished 2nd overall (12 points), - in 3rd position Katarzyna Tylinska/Marta Kaszalowicz from Poland. The Olympic Gold-medallists 2000 - Jenny Armstrong/Belinda Stowell, AUS followed in 4th position.

The fleet of over 80 470 Men teams included a "surprise" winner, the Bulgarian team Igor Ivashintsov/Yvri Kudriavtsev scored best with 10 points overall, closely followed by the Italians Gabrio Zandona/Andrea Trani (11 points) as 2nd and the Frenchmen Nicolas Novara/Maxime Le Bessou in 3rd place.

With the light to moderate winds young Antje Schneidewind (18 years of age) from Berlin scores best in the Europe W single-handed Olympic dinghy; her competition and closest rival was Tatiana Drozdovskaya, BLR, in 2nd and Tomke Rappold, GER, in 3rd position overall.

The fleet of 117 Lasers is divided in 3 groups, at present Paul Goodison, GBR leads the fleet with 8 points overall, followed by Thomas Le Breton, FRA, in 2nd position and Robert Scheidt from Brazil (Olympic Gold 1996 and Olympic Silver 2000, multiple world champion of the class) being 3rd overall at present.

Gentlemen first .... on the Mistral Men and Women course: The Brazilian Ricardo Santos shares the lead (even points overall) with Joao Rodrigues from Portugal in the Mistral Men's fleet, and Alexander Baronjan, GER, who represented Germany in Sydney 2000, placed 3rd after 2 races.

In the Mistral W fleet Lai Shan Lee from Hong Kong, who won Kiel Week in the past, convinced her competition again by finishing the 2 races in 1st position. The Gold Medallist from Sydney 2000, Alessandra Sensini, ITA scored 6 points overall in 2nd position, - followed by Natasha Sturges, GBR in 3rd place. The German Silver Medal winner Sydney 2000, Amelie Lux was close to the lead in 4th position after 2 races.

2 races were sailed on the Tornado course with Robert Wilson/Will Howden, GBR leading the fleet after 2 races. The German brothers Christian and Helge Sach, having missed the Olympic participation Sydney 2000 , placed 2nd and confirmed that the Olympic Tornado class, changed to double trapeze and Gennaker, now is much faster and ..... much more fun to sail, especially in strong winds! The Swedes Martin Strandberg/Kristian Mattsson placed 3rd, just one point ahead of the Austrian Gold Medal winners Sydney 2000 Roman Hagara/ Hans Peter Steinacher in 4th position overall.

As "one-offs" the Yngling class as newly elected Olympic Women's keelboat performed well in the first 2 races of Kiel Week 2001; the fleet included 16 teams, and Annelies Thies/P. de Jong/C. von der Does, NED, placed 1st , followed by Monica Azon/D. Marques/B. Cordobes, ESP and the German Ulrike Schümann/W. Bülle/W. Lippert (Vice European Champion 2001) in third position.

Calm breeze prevailed on the Star as well as on the Finn course; consequently both classes sailed just 1 race today. The Olympic and World champions of the Star class were unbeatable again, - Mark Reynolds/Magnus Liljedahl, USA sailed their first victory in the 41 teams' fleet, followed by the Portuguese team Afonso Domingos/B. Santos in 2nd place and Bronze "Star" (Sydney 2000) Torben Grael/Marcelo Ferreira from Brazil in 3rd place.

The "Bugatti" of the Olympic Classes, the Finn Dinghy, included over 40 boats, and Michael Maier from Slowenia finished 1st in today's regatta. 2nd was Michael Fellmann, GER, who participated in Sydney 2000, and 3rd Michal Hruby, CZE.
