Sail the World Weekend
India

In the vast sub-continent of india, the harbour of Mumbai saw young Sea Cadets celebrating the joys and challenges of sailing.
The Sea Cadet Corps is a non governement voluntary youth organization with honorary officers which levies no charge for sailing but has been deeply involved with the sport since 1938.

Over the Sail the World Weekend, a 'Get Sailing' programme was organized from the National Headquarters of the Sea Cadet Corps in India from the training ship Jawhar, located on the waterfront in South Mumbai.

With the sun playing hide and seek behind the cloud formations and a drizzle now and then, at the end of the south west monsoon, Sea Cadets and ex Sea Cadets and also a few well wishers (novices & pros, young & old - aged from 11 to 72) had wonderful two sessions - one on Saturday and the other on Sunday in the International Optimist, Cadet, Enterprise and 420 Classes, out on the water between Jawahar and Oyster Rock.

The Training Ship Jawahar and the Sea Cadet Corps has conducted various National events in varied classes and also conducted the International Cadet Class World Championships in 1976, 1988 and 1996 and the IODA Asian Sailing Championship in 2003. In conjunction with the Naval Sailing Club, adjacent to Training Ship Jawahar, Sea Cadet Corps was actively involved with the conduct of the 1982 Asian Games Sailing Event, 1987 Commonwealth Regatta, the International Enterprise World Championship in 1991 and the Asian Sailing Regatta in 2004.

NOVICES - Sea Cadets in the age group of 11 to 14. 116 first timers were introduced to Optimist sailing by 22 Sea Cadets in 6 sessions, 8 in the cadet class, 5 in the Enterprise/420.

PROS - ex Sea Cadets - gold medal winner at the Cadet Worlds in 1988, First gold medal winner abroad in China in 1989, National & Team Championship Winners and many other non medal winners, YAI Chief National Coach were on the water in some form or the other on Saturday afternoon along with our well wisher INDIA'S first Olympian sailor - 1972 and currently Commodore of the oldest Club in Mumbai.

The Yachting Association of India and the Sea Cadet Corps have been immensely proud to be associated with the global initiative of the International Sailing Federation.

Thank you again for helping ISAF celebrate 100 years of sailing - let's get out there and Sail the World!

"I am very proud to be President of the International Sailing Federation as we celebrate 100 years. What is evident is that the past one hundred years mark a period of vibrant and exciting growth for sailing. A period when the spirit of solidarity, friendship and passion for sailing has prevailed over borders, religions, genders and cultures. This weekend of 1-2 September, the "Sail the World" celebrations capture the very spirit of sailing. I am delighted at the number of events, clubs and classes all over the world partnering with ISAF as we join together to "Sail the World."' Göran PETERSSON
