He is the one who knows exactly what to do to solve any kind of problem during the race. He knows, for example, who will say where a broken mast will be fixed in the Cape Horn area or what is the easiest way to send spare parts to each one of the nine ports of the Volvo Ocean Race. He also knows which hotel will host Brasil 1's sailors during the Cape Town stopover or where the Brasil 1 team will eat in Melbourne.
'I know my job is not the most glamorous in the team, but I know it's really important to do it. And to do this job efficiently, you have to think ahead of the events. First of all, you have to be really prepared for a problem, scan all the possibilities you have. For example, in some stopovers, it will be easier to bring the repair team to the port where our boat is in. In another situation, it will be necessary to move to boat back to where the repair team is. That's why planning is essential', LE QUILLIEC explains.
Another job of the shore manager is to serve as bridge between sailors and the race office. 'It is really difficult to speak to someone in the boat, so I'll be the one who is going to be the link between everything. Another important aspect here is the communication with the sailors' families. If someone wants to be in the stopover in the day of the arrival, I'm the one to call to know when it is happening', he said.
In the last Volvo Ocean Race LE QUILLIEC was the shore manager for two boats. He worked for the Nautor Challenge, with the boats Amer Sports One, third overall, and Amer Sports Too, an all-women crew that finished eighth overall.
Brasil 1 Shore Team has not been nominated yet. Brasil 1, sponsored by VIVO, Motorola, QUALCOMM and Apex, is being built in Indaiatuba, São Paulo. The end of the construction is scheduled for May. The christening will happen in June. The crew is formed by five Brazilian sailors and six from other nationalities
